Help me not buy a P88

I saw a slightly used Walther P88 a week ago in a gun shop. Now I am in lust. Help! Somebody please give me some info on this pistol and tell why I shouldn't buy it.

Don't buy it because:

1. It's so accurate you'll begin taking it to the range exclusively, and all your other guns will feel neglected.

2. It's so well made, with that deep blue that only Walther seems to achieve, that you'll be spoiled for anything else.

3. It fits your hand like a glove. Your wife/girlfriend may be jealous

4. Walther makes a CO2 version so you can practice in the back yard on those days when you can't make it to the range.

5. You'll be tempted to buy a "Walther" shirt or hat to gloat (sometimes known as the "H&K effect")

6. You'll spend hours trying to decide if it's a combat handgun made to competition standards, or a competition handgun made with the military in mind.

7. You'll also notice that it says "made in Germany" instead of "made in West Germany" and you'll be tempted to gloat over the fall of the Iron Curtain, too.

8. You'll feel the need to buy a nice Pelican or SKB case to take it to range in.

9. The recoil is so mild that your wife/girlfriend might not give it back

10. You'll begin to think about collecting Walthers, a most financially ruinous project.

Honestly, it's a serious piece of machinery that will last a lifetime i f properly cared for. As I noted in a post elsewhere on this board, Walthers will only get more scarce in the future and if you want one, get it now. Prices are already starting to jump now that the factory has discontinued the P88, and the P5 in favor of the P99.

Um not very convincing. What is a good price for a P88 in 95% condition. Anyone? I am getting very tempted. Overtime time boss I need some Overtime here!

Mags are a B!tch to get, and they are prohibiitvely expensive. In the $125.00 range. You will soon have more invested in your mags, then your gun.

Oh yeah Walther P-38... Oh wait I forgot that we were talking about the 88. I have heard that it is a pretty good gun except for the grip being a little too bulky. I would'nt really want one due to that fact its one of those gun that you just don't like for some reason. Yet, it still is a good gun so I can't say anything. But a P-38 I'll take one of them any day :)

They're as accurate as the Sig210. Nicely finished. Is it the p88 or p88c? The price is around $700 used. Don't buy it, you can get a Sig 228 or a BHP with a trigger job for the same money. Where did you see this gun again? Do you have the telephone number? Just kidding, get it just to have it. I like to think that the Sig is like a Mercedes while the Walther P88 is a Rolls.

Full size or Compact? As The Silver Bullet 1719 mentioned, the only thing I have against the P-88 (full size) is the upper portion of the grip. It's a bit on the wide square side. This feature requires a slight shift (into a sligtly less comfortable position) in my average sized shooting hand so that my trigger finger's first digit can cover the trigger up to the joint (double action mode). No biggie as I shoot two handed and mostly in single action.

One of, if not the, tightest guns I have. Maybe too tight. I've never had any problems but all I've ever shot through it is ball. Some posters have mentioned FTFs, particularly with HPs.

Incredible quality.

P-88 mags and P-99 mags aren't switchable without major mods. (Cutting into steel is what I consider major. I finally checked out the mag situation after months of forgetting/remembering/forgetting.)

Bought mine NIB very early '90s for $900 OTD. A bit high, but it was rare (in my area), it was there, and I wanted it.

I saw one at a gunshow three weeks ago for $1,000 nib. I have the P88 Compact which is a fine pistol and I would like to have the P88 but $1,000 was more than I was willing to part with.

I cant say any reason to tell someone NOT to buy a gun, sorry, no help from me, as a matter of fact, buy it now, then go and buy the cO2 version so you can shoot the same gun all the time.

I hate to say it, but...

I shot the 88 and didn't like it. I'm a diehard Walther fan and was practically slobbering over the gun when a buddy of mine purchased it. I even paid for his range time that day, just so I could shoot it.

And I couldn't hit with it. I tried three different brands of ammo.

I picked up my CZ-75 and drilled 15 into about a 3" circle with the same ammo. I picked up my .380 PPK and put all six into a silver dollar. I tried the P88 again and was embarrassed.

Go figure. It was a disappointment.

It had to be me...

I think some of our posters are mixing apples and oranges. I think they are talking about a P88 full size and a P88 Compact. If you can buy a full sized P88 for $700, buy it NOW! If it is a compact $700 is a fair price and you can purchase magazines for the compact model at CDNN but not for the full sized P88. As others have said the full sized P88 is one awesome weapon. I have no experience with the compact model but I have never heard anything bad about them. Regards, Richard.
