Help me make a decision...

I recently acquired a Super Blackhawk from a friend and decided I really like the .44 mag cartridge because of its accuracy and power. Not to mention it is very fun to shoot! :D

I've narrowed down my next purchase, which will be a da type wheelgun to the Ruger Super Redhawk (5.5" barrel) or the S&W 629-6 (4"barrel). Purpose is for range shoot and home defense ;)
I'm leaning towards the Ruger since I can get it in blue finish (only Kalifornia approved  ) but the Smith is a nicely constructed revolver also, plus the shorter barrel helps in concealment. What are the pros and cons of both and which would get my money's worth?

Thanks.

Both are very nice weapon's indeed-

and both are well worthy of consideration. When faced with
the same choice back in July of 2000; I opted for the Smith
& Wesson 629-5 "Classic", with a 5" barrel, and I have never
looked back. After owning numerous S&W model 29's over
the year's, I'd have to say this one is my favorite. Fit and
finish are excellent; with an unbelieveably smooth double
action. Just my opinion, and $0.02 cent's worth.

The Ruger would save you alot of money. I've got a stainless Redhawk 5.5 that I got new for 419. It is a very accurate and dependable gun. I am a big Redhawk fan now. I have a Bianchi X15 vertical shoulder holster that isn't bad to wear, it's a nice well made leather holster but it cost 95 dollars or so. The Winchester USA 240 gr. is available at a fair price and it is pretty decent ammo. You obviously don't need to go get any specific Personal Defense, Hydra-Shok, or whatever specialty ammo. The 44 magnum will place a big hole in whatever you want stopped. Just don't buy non American cheap ammo that might not go bang when you need it to.

Sorry about the second post here, I forgot to tell you that it's not a Super Redhawk your looking at if it's a 5.5 inch barrel, it's a Redhawk. The Super Redhawks are 7.5 or 9.5 inch. The Redhawk is a great gun though.

If it were me, I'd get the Super Redhawk over the Smith, but the Smith over the Redhawk. The Ruger trigger will *likely* be smoother out of the box, but with just a little work, the Smith will be better. This has been my personal finding, you may or may not find the same.

I have the blued version of Dan's gun: the 29 classic.

The SA trigger pull alone is reason enough to go for it. I like Rugers, but in this case I'd only get one if you needed it for truly hefty loads.
