Hi,
I was planning on buying a new savage, but found a deal locally that might be hard to resist. Can someone identify this savage and scope. The information I have on it is that is is the 10 series in 308 24 inch barrel. The scope is supposable a Burris Black Diamond 6-24X50 30mm, but when I look it up it doesn't seem to look anything like this. Anyone know whats up with this?

What would be a good price to pay for this used setup, if its in good condition. And what are some things to look for to make sure it IS in good condition. I think burris has a lifetime warranty so I wouldn't be worried about the scope as I can exchange it, but what about the rifle.

Looks like it was a Model 10 tactical, then they put a Choate stock on it.

I would say $600-$700 is a good price.

And that's definitely a Burris scope (well made in my opinion)

Well it definitely looks like a burris, but i just can't figure out which one it is. By the picture it does not look like the black diamond series, or any other series for that matter. If its a black diamond series, wouldnt the scope alone cost 800-900 (used value of atleast 450-550)?

That is either a pre-accutrigger Savage or a Stevens. The pics aren't clear enough, but it doesn't look like it has the accutrigger.

How many rounds have been fired through the rifle?

Pics of the other side would be nice to see if the bolt has the Savage Arms name and Logo, as all model 10's do.

This one has the Choate Ultimate Varmint Stock, which I don't like, but it's not my rifle so, if you like it, great!

Up close pics of the Scope would be nice to verify what it is...

The Burris Black Diamond Scopes, from the SWFA website, are side focus, not Adjustable Objective and do not look like what is pictured on that scope. I'm not too familiar with Burris scopes, so it could be an older model, but someone else would probably know for sure...

To me, it looks like some mis-information or mis-understood equipment by the seller...

Yea as I said in the PM reply, I definitely think the seller is misinformed. Maybe he inherited it, but I am not gonna buy it until I see it for myself and fully inspect it. Just wanted to look at it fully prepared.

My savage 10 FPle1 pre-accutrigger in .308win did 1000 yards. I gave $400.00 for mine used in original stock and replaced that and the scope right away. for $900 in that stock (if it is a 10 fp) is not a bad price. With that set up should weigh right at 12 pounds.

Well I would say that is an older Black Diamond scope proabably from around the same time the Savage was made, since it appears to have a flat rear receiver ring. The writing on the objective as near as I can make out appears to be very similar to the new Burris Black Diamond scopes. Plus the posi-loc on the side makes it a Burris scope. New they are around $800.

Is that something that stays good 'for a lifetime' or is this 800 dollar scope from 8 years ago Im guessing(they started in 2002) as good as cheaper scopes now days. I know technology advances at light speed.

If you could get the serial number, you could call Savage and they'd tell you exactly how that rifle was set up when it left the factory. I used that service just last month and the customer service staff was truly courteous, knowledgeable and helpful.

From the picture, it's definitely a Savage action, and may be pre-accutrigger. The accutrigger came out in 2003 and this rifle doesn't have an accutrigger. It might be a Stevens action, refitted with a heavy barrel and Choate stock. The trigger might be aftermarket as well, perhaps a Timney or Rifle Basix. Both of those are fine triggers for that action.

I agree that the scope appears to be a Burris. However, the only way to know how that rifle left the factory would be to obtain the serial number and call Savage. With that information, you'd know what mods have been made to the rifle.

The rifle looks to be an older pre-Accutrigger Savage 10FP,the stock is a Choate Ultimate Varminter, and the scope looks to be a Burris-probably an older adjustable objective model.

If it sounds like a good deal to you, then buy it.
To me,it's about a $500-550 setup used. While Burris scopes are decent hunting optics, they lack the vertical & windage adjustment for any long range use in general.

Used Savage 10fp-$350
Used aftermarket stock-$100
Used Burris scope-$100

Thanks for the help guys. I think im gonna pass this one up. There is too much misinformation from the seller, which also means he either doesn't know or won't tell the truth about if it was taken care of. Since I'm new and not experienced, I wouldn't trust my gut on whether its in good enough condition to be valued at what he wants. Thanks again

I'd say it is a $400 rifle with a $400 scope on it. Even though it is an old tech Burris Black Diamond if it is broken and can't be fixed or they will replace it with a new one. $900 would be a premium for this rifle that is for sure but if you could pick it up for $6-700 I don't think you would do much better buying a new Savage.

Just checked around on the web (gunbroker, ebay, sniper central, and LR hunting) and people have sold that scope from between $4-500. I don't know about the adjusments for LR shooting but a lot of that can be fixed with a 10-20 MOA base.
