Im looking for a scope for a 2001 Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight chambered in 300 WSM.

I have 400 to spend. Listing the pros and cons of such recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you.

In that budget and with a FWT rifle I'd get a 3-9X40 or 4-12X40 Leupold VX2. I think the Leupold scopes are the best fit for light rifles as they offer very serviceable power ranges and they are lighter than most other scopes in the same class. I have Vortex, Nikon, Bushnell Elite, and have owned Zeiss in the past and I'll choose Leupold for any light weight rifle over the rest.

I'd buy this.

You can get the same scope for $50 less without the long range dots, but I'd buy the dots for my rifle

I'd mount it in these.

You have a nice lightweight trim rifle. No reason to put a big heavy scope in heavy steel mounts. This combo works well with your rifle and gives enough magnification for shots farther than most people need to shoot.

SWFA has the 3-9x42 Meopta Meopro for $400. It rivals anything else coming out of Europe, but at less than half the price. Shop around and you might do even better.

Different strokes...If I was setting it up for myself,it would get a fixed 6X by 42mm objective Leupold with the standard duplex.
Its the FX-3,I believe.Higher grade lense coatings,in your price range.
With a fixed scope, you are always looking through the same scope, with a variable, not so.

That reticle is one mil duplex post tip to center,or 2 mils across the duplex...about 7 MOA.So,if an antelope fits the duplex,200 yds.Fits center to post,400 yds.Etc.

You might find if you zero that .300 at about 300 yds,the top post tip will hit a ping pong ball at 100 yds.and the lower post will zero at about 430 or so.Of course, this depends on the load, bullet, etc. It will be in that ballpark.

Learn how to do that and you will have a very practical range and hold tool.

One has been on my .257 AI for over 20 years.I'm building a light 30-06.Thats what it will wear.

Hunting in Michigan only? If so, then a 2-7, 2-8, 3-9, 2.5-10, something like that. If you might go out to the desert West, then I might recommend a 4-12 or 4.5-14 etc (or even a fixed 6 or fixed 10)..... and given your price range and the fact that the higher magnifs are more expensive, I really cannot recommend one yet. But the Loopy advice ain't bad at all, of course.

Incidentally, I talked to a guy on the phone yesterday who lives in Idaho and is from Beaverton OR where Loopys are made, and has many of them, and knows a guy who works there at Leupold. Even HE mis-pronounces their name, calling them LE-O-POLDS rather than LOO-POLDS..... sigh.

SWFA has the 3-9x42 Meopta Meopro for $400.

Also a good call. Check the samplelist.com and ebay often.
