I just moved to Santa Clara Co., CA. (I know, I know...one of the most nonfriendly places to ccw in teh country...but love will have you doin strange things).

I would really appreciate any and all help locating good gun shops and ranges in the area

Congratulations!! Where are you moving from?

You moved to a FANTASTIC place for quality ranges. Even the old days of ultra conservative rural Southern California didn't offer such a selection.

Santa Clara County has it's own shooting range. I've never been there, but it is on my must visit list: http://www.parkhere.org/ Look for the Field Sports park.

I know there are one or two ranges in the San Jose area and Targetmasters in Milpitas behind the police department (bought my first handgun there).

If you are a shotgunner then you might look into www.martinezgunclub.net.

Most of the clubs I shoot at are in to the north:

www.chabotgunclub.com Most beautiful range around. Real safety nazis on the public range as they are leasing land in an East Bay Regional Park. I used to be a range safety officer there and it is my primary marksmanship range.

www.unitedsportsmen.com which includes www.diablorodandgun.com. Twenty-five dollar membership gets great benefits including reloading components at a 6% markup.

www.richmondrodandgun.com which hosts www.richmondhotshots.com, some of the most competent handgun and 3 gun competitors in the area.

slrange.tripod.com Small but convenient.

www.lprg.org/facilities.html Mostly shotgun last time I visited, pretty hillside location. Some members visited Chabot while handgun ranges were under renovation and proved not to be the safest shooters around. One with extreme attitude.

Others can probably fill you in better on the gun shops as I haven't done recent competitive shopping. The one I would have warned you against (Trader's in San Leandro) had their FFL revoked so that is no longer an issue.

The two I've purchased from are Targetmasters in Milpitas (see above) and J&R Sports in Livermore under the previous owner. New J&R owners are probably okay, but I've not had that experience. I used a shop in Walnut Creek for FFL transfer, but can't remember the name at the moment.

I've also visited www.canyon-sports.com in Martinez several times, but so far not made purchases.

Check out www.gunshopfinder.com for more shops.

Hope to see you at the range...
