Help me figure out exactly what breed of Savage 12 I have...

Ok here's what I think I know.

I have traded for a Savage model 12 single-shot in .223 with a 26" 1:9 twist fluted heavy barrel. It has the target accu-trigger which breaks at a crisp 1.5#. It has a Choate synthetic stock with a "V" style bedding block in it. John Plaster's name is on the side.

I think it's a discontinued model 12VSS Varminter.

Here's what's written on the side:

And here's a pic of the rifle:

What I'm wondering is what's the story behind these rifles? Is this likely the original stock for the rifle? Could you purchase these rifles straight through Savage or were they some kind of distributor exclusive or what? Also whats a ballpark of what they are worth? The rifle is like new and appears to not have been shot very much.

Well I think I've got it figured out.

I plugged the serial # in on the Savage parts finder, and it came back as a 12VSS-S, manufactured Feb. 2003. It's the original stock for the rifle, and it was a regular catalog item. Sometime between then and now they have discontinued this stock option which is a shame because its shaped nicely for target shooting and is very rigid. But it can still be bought aftermarket for around $200

V=heavy barrel

SS=stainless steel

-S=single shot
