Hi,

So, I've been going back and forth on my 1st rifle selection. I can't decide between lever action or bolt action, rimfire or centerfire. Perhaps you can help me decide.

I've done my research, handled guns at various gun stores and pretty much narrowed the field. I'm so torn, between bolt action and lever action, that I have finally come to the conclusion that I will eventually buy one of each. I would like one to be a rimfire, the other to be centerfire. So, I'm trying to decide in which configuration to buy first.

I would say that most of my shooting, for now, will be at my local 25 yard range located close to my house. Later, I will start to go to the 100+ range that is farther out and would require a "special trip" (husband and father of 3 little ones, so it could be hard leaving for a full day of shooting). I'm not a hunter. These would be for personal enjoyment, plinking and target shooting at the range.

The two brands that I kept going back, time and time again, were Henry lever actions and CZ bolt actions. I'm not really interested about other brands and platforms, as I already did my research and handled everything I could find. I know which models I like after trying all the different models within Henry and CZ. I would like to start with a .22lr first, then go to centerfire later.

So, this is my question.... After reading the above, which way would you go?

Option 1: Buy a Henry H001T Frontier in .22lr now and then buy a CZ 527 Lux /FS in .223 later.

or

Option 2: Buy a CZ 455/452 Lux/FS in .22lr now and then buy a Henry H006M Big Boy in .357 Mag later.

Just curious to which you would pick and why, given those choices. Perhaps it would help me decide.

Thanks.

Buy the CZ now and a atleast a 4-16 scope first. then later buy !!

Why a henry 357 or .22lr. Nether henry would be a practical choice for many . Pretty but nothing special.

I voted for the Henry in 22lr now and the CZ in 223 later. My reasoning is you're going to love the 22lr at 25 yards and that is what you are going to do the most. I too had 3 kids at home for many years and even running across town to my range 20 minutes away and shooting for a few hours was almost undoable most of the time. Later, when the kids are older and you can take them with you get the 223.

Well, I know I want a lever action for several reasons, But most of all it reminds me of my dad and myself watching old westerns growing up. My father was not a gun guy and never (to my knowledge) owned a firearm. But, we watched those old westerns every Saturday. It also brings me back to my youth when my father got me a Red Ryder for Christmas one year. I had many, many great days shooting that little air rifle (still have it and actually took it out a few weeks ago). He passed away last year and I miss watching those old westerns with him. He had a good sense of humor and the reverend who did his service knew him well. At the service there was a life sized cardboard cutout of "The Duke", holding his lever-action, to oversee the proceedings. I know he would have had a good laugh at that. :)

I've shouldered and worked the action on a lot of different guns at the gun stores I have been visiting. To me, the Henry lever actions I tried were the smoothest and slickest working actions out of all the new and used rifles I tried.

I know, from reading online, that Henry stands by their products and their CS is reportedly top-notch, for those who had to use it. They warranty their rifles for the life of the rifle, not just to the original purchaser. I requested a catalog a while back from Henry, and since have been on their e-mail list. The amount of donations that Henry gives, on a regular basis, in the Hundreds of thousands, to different organizations and charities is very telling of their moral contribution to the community (NRA, Children's Hospitals, Olympic Shooting Team, Hunter Heritage Foundation, etc..). On top of all that, they are American made.

So, although Henry might not be for everyone, for the reasons above,I decided to go with Henry for my lever-action rifle choice.

To tell the truth, I'm starting to lean this way. I can see how a lever action would be more fun at the closer ranges. Since the firearm that will most likely get the most use would be at the 25 yard range, it makes sense for that one to be the .22lr. I'm with you on the difficulty of getting out of the house. My local range is only 15 minutes from my house and even then I have trouble getting away. Such is life for the parent of three (one of which has autism).

CZ

This one is a no-brainer, at least for me. CZ all the way. .....
However, take a look at the CZ American and opposed to the Lux. I did not do my homework and wound up with the Lux, fell out of love and switched to the American. ..... :)

Be Safe !!!

Just run out and but what you want but when you say the word "duke " at least buy a period look , Winchester. Or a copy closer in look to a real henry -

You must have missed these parts, so I'll re-post them....

This includes the Ubertis, Marlins, Rossi,, Brownings and, yes, even a couple of Winchesters I was able to shoulder and work the action on... like I said, I've done my research and know what I like. If you don't like the Henry rifles, then that is your right. But, please, respect my choices that I made for myself.

I'm not so much concerned with period correctness as I am with what I like.

My vote goes to the Henry first in 22 lr, then CZ in 223. The reasoning behind this is simple. The Henry is a great short range fun gun ( I have one and love it). The range you can get to most often is 25 yds. When you want to shoot longer distances the 223 will have better ballistics than a 357 mag. And the CZ will be more accurate, and thereby more enjoyable at the 100 yard range. Just sending lead down range is fun, for a few days, then you will want to hit smaller targets and have tighter groups. That will be more difficult with a lever in 357 mag.

I also will predict that after you have these 2 rifles you will want another, and another, and another. That is when you should get the Henry in 357 and the CZ in 22. Then the gun bug will bite again and you will "need" another one.:D. Welcome to the club!

Bit of an odd choice which I don't really get

I guess I could have worded the question/poll a bit differently to make it clearer/easier to understand. I could have even left out brands and models to make it even more clear. That said, I wanted people to focus on the question, and not have it turn into another "look into this gun" or "I reccomend this gun" type thread, since I already have particular brands/models I'm looking into.

To break it down.. I guess what I am asking is.

You are going to buy two rifles. One gun is going to be a lever action, the other a bolt action. One would be a rimfire, one would be a centerfire.

Would you buy a rimfire lever action and a centerfire bolt?

or

Would you buy a centerfire lever-action and a rimfire bolt?

I got the Henry H001 for my son and he loves it.
i would go with that first. With the.22 shortage you might be a able to get a good deal.

I like the CZ rimfire idea

Everybody ought to start with a good .22lr bolt gun. Not just for targets and plinking, but it will be quite an effective small game hunter as well.

I love levers, but never been a fan of them in rimfires.

Add my vote for Option 1. Have fun shooting .22 for a while. Levers are fun. You need a little better focus for your anticipated need and application for a centerfire bolt. Take your time.
