Help me decide between S&W 625 or 617

I know, 45 acp & 22lr...2 diff't calibers, 2 diff't applications but I'm trying to decide on one of them. It will strictly be for range use. I've shot both, I like both & will be equally happy w/ either.

ACP, or Long Colt. Either way.

I'd go with the 617.:D Countless enjoyment to be had for the little ammo outlay of Long Rifle. Cheap practice in DA revolver shooting translates over into dramatic improvement with the centerfire revolvers.

My choice would be the model 617: arthritis, computer wrist, and much less respect for the .45 A.C.P. cartridge than the .357 magnum and .44 magnum.

As much as I love my 625 (and I do love my 625) I might also say 617 because of how much more you'd be able to shoot at the range for the same money you'd be spending on .45s.

My vote is for the 617. I own as many .22s (7) as any other caliber except .44 Mag. (9) and they are great fun and extremely accurate.

My first post - please be gentle :)

Faced this decision a couple of weeks ago. Walked into my favorite gunshop, ready to plunk down the dinero for a 617. However, a PPT (private party transfer) 625-7 3" in 45 Colt winked at me. These are as rare as hen's teeth in Cali, so guess which one I got :D

Seriously, I would go for the 617, especially if it's with the 10 round cylinder. Great for working on your trigger pull, and you can't beat the price of the ammo.

Ok, now I'm leaning towards the 617. The question of barrel length has come up.. So, which should I get 4" or 6"? I'm thing the 4" will be easier to carry & point, but the 6" will be more accurate.

HELP

Kermit,
My 617 is the 6" 10 shot model. I sent it back to the S&W Custom Shop for an action/trigger tuneup, target trigger, and target hammer. This is one sweet revolver now. Very accurate, too. I carry it around the farm here in a Bianchi #111 Cyclone cross-draw holster and it is not a problem as far as barrel length is concerned.
Regards,
Rich

The gun weighs 42oz. in 4". So, unless you are real athletic, you may quickly tire of holding an extra 2" of full-underlug out at the end of your outstretched arm.:o Seriously, 6" in an older style of K-22 without the confounded underlug balances well. The 4" full-underlug of newer guns is still a bit more muzzle-heavy than I prefer.

i would get the 617 in the closest barrel length to the defensive revolver i would use. in my case, that would be the 4".additionally,use the same design grip you may use on a potential defensive revolver.
if your thinking about hunting,or want pure range performance, then go with something longer.
consider both over time, particullarly if you fancy getting into pin shooting some day.

I've tried both the 4" and the 6" models - the 4" balances better for me. Didn't see too much difference in accuracy; then again, only fired on a 15yd range.

...well, I'LL go AGAINST THE GRAIN here...my suggestion would be to go with the 625!!! .22's are fun, but...you can ALWAYS buy another .22...the 625 is a REAL GUN!!! Lotsa' fun too, BTW....mikey357

I'm with you Mikey

The 625 in .45ACP/AR is great fun. Doesn't beat me up and I don't have to chase the brass. PMC even makes a factory round in .45AR. For a .22 I prefer an auto. Though I have a Taurus 94.
