Help me buy another gun

Yes This is another thread asking the people of the internet to help me spend my money.

Currently I have been looking for a full sized gun for a while and I have narrowed it down two guns (Or atleast 2 brands) That I particularly like.

Beretta 92FS- The looks of this gun alone have me sold on it.

CZ 75 platform- Again another great series, with a great history to back it up.

I'm not going to list the pros and cons of these two guns because they are pretty self explanatory. I am looking for anyone with personal experience with either and why I should buy which one.

My biggest attraction to these who guns are the DA/SA they both have and if you have any other full sized DA/SA guns to suggest I am also open to other options.

Easy peasy, CZ.

In terms of purely mechanical accuracy, few hanguns can equal the CZ75, much less beat it. The ergos are far superior as well.

Both are excellent choices, but let me steer you into a slightly modified suggestion.

The beretta 92fs is excellent. I carried one in the Navy for years(M9). If I were to buy one now however, I'd get the 92A1 model. It has replaceable rear *and* front sights, where the 92FS the front sight is fixed. Also comes with a rail for mounting lights or lasers. Add some wood grips and you're gold.

The CZ family, the 75B is the ol' king. Tons of great variants like the 75B SA and the 85 with ambidextrous controls. The SP-01 tactical comes with Night Sights and rail and has killer reviews. Great feeling in the hand.

Both of these guns are high capacity and comfortable to shoot and handle all day/everyday.

I just got a Beretta M9. I wanted a full size metal framed DA/SA 9mm. I had a few in mind but I was leaning toward a 92FS or M9. When I found a deal I jumped on it. It is just such a classic pistol, and so gorgeous.

I have several Glocks and just wanted something different. I love the open slide design and how it feeds straight into the chamber. Everything feels very smooth and it's not even broken in yet.

I put in the "D" hammer spring which lightens the trigger pull a little bit. I am also considering doing the "G" conversion. This turns the safety/decocker into a decocker only.

Not trying to sway your opinion, just sharing my thoughts.

Here lies the problems. haha Its a gun im going to shoot a lot. something I can take out and have fun day of shooting with the guys. But both are going to do the job really well. If I'm being honest I really think the Beretta looks much better esthetically.

Then something I can be comfortable with setting next to my nightstand to take the place of my current EDC Glock 26.

(The Glock will remain my EDC) But it can't hurt to have a different home defense gun ;)

Both excellent guns. If you think the 92 looks better, let that be the deciding factor...just my .02.

I have owned both the CZ-75b, the Tanfoglio copy TZ-75, and the Beretta 92fs. To me, the Beretta fit my hands much better even though I have fairly small hands. While the grip is on the chunky side, the trigger reach actually isn't long and it's much shorter in both DA and SA than the CZ. Also, the grip is nicely shaped so it doesn't feel bulky to me. On contrast, the CZ's trigger reach was impossible for me to get to in DA, and even SA was more of a stretch. In terms of the trigger pull, my Beretta's is much smoother and lighter; the CZ seemed not as smooth and felt like it stacked more than the Beretta. in SA mode, the CZ, at the very end of the pull, cams a bit which gave a gritty feel to me. The Beretta, in contast, had none of that.

I REALLY wanted to like the CZ... it was, on paper, everything I thought I wanted and I loved its lines. However, for me, the Beretta has a much more comfortable grip, superior feeling trigger system in both DA and SA, better trigger reach, and overall better ergomonics. Translated, my downrange performance with the CZ was always average, whereas the Beretta performs much better in my hands. The slide on the Beretta racks much easier and smoother as well.

Either are great pistols, but in my case the Beretta had way more advantages than the CZ. To each their own, though.

I'd vote for the Beretta, no personal exp with the 75, although I've met a lot of people at the range that love them.

Probably can't go wrong either way... hell buy both. :D

I've owned a Taurus PT-92 (clone of the Beretta 92, made on Beretta machinery), SAR B6P (CZ clone), CZ 75B, and CZ P-07. Given that, I'm sure it's no surprise that I prefer the CZ. For me the platform just fits the hand amazingly well, points intuitively, and I prefer the looks. The 92 was comfortable as well, but always felt a little chunky to me. The big downer for me was not being able to replace the front sight because it is part if the slide. I owned a stainless model, which made it very hard to pick up the front sight quickly even after I repainted it. I did like having both a decocker and safety on the 92, and specifically with the Taurus I liked that it was frame mounted vs the Beretta being slide mounted.

When it comes down to it, either is a great buy, just comes down to personal preference.

I was in your shoes a couple years ago. I wanted an all metal hammer fired pistol, and had it narrowed down to the M9, CZ75b, and Sig P226.

I went to the LGS and handled them all. Felt they were all equal in terms of ergos, with fit and finish of the Beretta being nicest (IMO). Shot them all, and found the M9 and CZ to be equals, with the Sig falling behind due to being a bit top heavy/high bore axis.

It was a hard choice between the M9 and CZ, but I walked out with the M9 that day. I think just due to aesthetics and being more well known. But the thought of the CZ kept bugging me. And three days later I went and bought it too. Moral of the story is you have to buy both, because they're both just amazing pistols :p

It's a pretty tough call actually, is there any way that you could rent them both on the same day? I love my CZ's and I'm pretty sure a 92FS is my next 9mm.

If I could only have one or other...I'd go Beretta personally. There's just something about the Beretta that makes sense, dunno! Sometimes you just have to buy a gun with your heart, not your head (sounds like a load of fairy-tale crap, but it's true :D).

Peace,
Quartermaster.

+1 on renting both on the same day.

You mentioned the G26. Do you have any other pistols-ones with safeties? I believe on the the Beretta the safety goes up to be turned off similar to S&W gen 1-3 pistols, the CZ goes down similar to most other pistols. CZ also offers models that can be reconfigured from safety to decocker functions (but not both at the same time like a USP). This might be something you want to pay attention to. For me it makes sense for all weapons with safeties to work the same for muscle memory. If I "sweep the safety" of a non safety model such as a Glock there is no loss of function.

While I like to looks of the Beretta, for me a CZ with the convertible manual of arms and a threaded barrel (just in case the rules for suppressor relax) was the best choice. YMMV.

My FiL has one of each. I have two of each: Beretta in 9mm and 40, CZ in 9mm and 45acp.

They are both excellent pistols. We both prefer the CZ's. Part of it is probably that the steel frame of the CZ lessens the recoil a bit as opposed to the alloy frame of the Beretta. The CZ's also happen to fit our hands better.

It's win/win. You can't go wrong either way. Whichever fits your hand best is undoubtedly the best choice.

One of my "Berettas" is a actually a Taurus clone. It is a PT-99, basically a 92 with adjustable sights. Its safety is better than the Beretta safety (frame-mounted instead of slide mounted, and acts as a decocker also). Its trigger is better than my FiL's Beretta 92, but not as good as my Beretta 96's. I have owned it since 1990 and it has served me well.

My "CZ-75" is also a "clone" made by Tanfoglio. It is built on the slightly larger frame, which fits my large hands better. My FiL was mildly annoyed that my military surplus clone actually has a better trigger than his brand-new "real" CZ-75, but his trigger is starting to smooth out over time.

They are both great guns. If it were me, I would go to a surplus place (CDI Sales on Gunbroker is my favorite, but there are others) and buy one of each surplus rather than just one brand-new one - two for the price of one! My surplus versions (the Tanfoglio 9mm and the Beretta 40 caliber) have had many thousands of rounds shot through them (mostly by me), and neither one has even needed springs yet. They are durable pistols and will doubtless outlast me.

I do not have any guns with a safety other then my rifles/shotguns so the way the safety functions will be my first experience with them. (Other then shoot friends and families guns.

I do agree that I will need to go and see both guns in person side by side to make a decision. The gun range I used to rent all my hand guns from and where I purchased my first had gun from stopped renting guns and started to do "Membership Only" range. Which is a huge pain in the ass when your just trying to find new guns to try out and buy.

Easy...CZ

So many great options out there. There are several Shadows on gunbroker right now if you want to get away from the regular ole 75 or SP-01's.

Really though the SP-01 fits the bill, you can tune it some for the range if you want or leave it alone. It will make a great HP pistol, my P-09 currently is mine but I'd love to have the all steel version. The slide on my 75 feels like it's on ball bearings, 50 yard shots are almost 100% on the mid range gong. Needless to say 15-25 yard plates don't stand a chance.

The grip of the Beretta like the 226 is just too bulky for my hands. The CZ feels near perfect.

The Taurus, while originating in Beretta's design, differs from the Beretta. The specs haven't been the same on these pistols for a very, very long time, and the Taurus feels bulkier to me and the trigger system didn't feel as refined either.

I owned a PT-99 and liked the safety system on it, more then the Beretta in fact. But the Beretta, to me, appeared to be a much better manufactured pistol.

After shooting a friend’s Beretta 92, I was sold and starting lusting for one. Then I was at a gun shop one day and decided to check out a CZ75, as I had always heard good things about them. The ergos worked better for me, and I ended up buying a 75b instead of the Beretta later that year. I still plan to own a Beretta 92 one day as it’s still a great gun, it’s just not the priority it once was . Go handle both, shoot them if possible, and let that be your decision. You really can’t go wrong with either.

I just got back from shooting my Beretta 92fs and an older Taurus PT92 that I just picked up. The Beretta is more refined and has a better trigger, or at least I like it better. Having said that the PT92 is no slouch. The one I picked up for $259 has a 1990 manufacture date and is a very nice gun. I think I'll add a coat of desert tan cerakote and keep it. I have owned a CZ-07 and a CZ75 compact. I liked them but they are gone and the Beretta is still in my possession.

Beretta 92FS- The looks of this gun alone have me sold on it.

You answered your own question; don't buy it and get the CZ and no matter how good the CZ is, you'll have buyer's remorse.
