Help me build my benelli bear gun

Hey all,

Im the owner of a benelli supernova here. I love the damn thing for skeet but am now looking to get something a bit more tactical for predator defense. Ive been checking out my options for a while here but I've really hit a brick wall. Heres what I think I want-

Supernova action(consistent with my skeet gun so Ill have lots of practice vs just buying an 870 and not learning muscle memory for either system)
6 shot shell holder for quick slugs
maybe a mag extension
18" barrel (the big thing, im currently rocking 28" and I aint hiking anywhere with that, nor does it point as quickly at close and dangerous targets vs short barrel)
Bead sights(probably quicker than ghost rings at close range and accurate enough to hit a charging animal, also consistent with my skeet platform so Ill be more proficient with it)

Considering I have the supernova already itd be nice if I could just buy a barrel, not so sadly they cost as much as a gun. So ill either have to buy a nova tactical and get the ghost ring post gunsmithed off and replaced with a bead OR just buy a bloody remmy. OR I could just get a Nova tactical and keep it as my tac gun and leave the supernova alone. My head is swimming, what would you guys do?
 
You can get a plain jane 930 with short barrel and bead sight for around $500.00. Load it with the Dixie Tri-Ball and there is nothing on earth that could stand up to that. The bead sight will give you instant target acquisition. I would focus as much on the ammunition as the gun.
 
Try looking for a used barrel. I ran into the same thing with the 870; a barrel costing as much as a gun. I got a used barrel from a wts listing on a gun forum for $85. Of course there are more 870 parts out there.
 
I don't know Canadian law but I was under the impression that carrying a firearm for self defense was illegal?

I am all about simplicity. As such, I recommend purchasing a shorter barrel for your current, familiar shotgun. I also suggest bear bells and pepper spray.

A proper ghost ring will work fine !! They are fast and accurate .The ring after all is thin and dosn't intrude into your vision.At close defence range you don'y need a fancy rifled barrel.
 
A ghost ring is fast I read. I would ask "compared to what"? A 9-power 32mm optical scope, sure. But there probably isn't any other shotgun sight that is slower.

No sight. Faster.
Bead. Faster.
Red-dot. Faster
Three-dot. Faster.
Rifle -- faster pointing with blade, slower putting the lolipop on the stick but more accurate.
Ghost Ring -- an intermediate/long-range rifle sight encumbered by lotsa metal to look thru to aquire and stay on target ESPECIALLY if it fills the rear sight.

Looks cool tho.
 
NO ! A proper ghost ring has a very thin ring which you don't notice and the eye automatically centers to the ring .Typical hole is 3/16" to 1/4" .Front post about 1/8". It works at any distance .
 
You have two options, stay with your current shotgun and go with a shorter barrel, IF Benelli will sell you one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg (Browning comes to mind) or buy a newer version with the shorter barrel and ghost ring sights.
Me, I would go with the newer one and keep the longer barrel one for hunting.
I had the same choice with my Browning and went with a 'Tactical' version and kept my Hunter for just that--hunting.

yeah I think you got it Batman. You can never have too many guns period!

I might just end up getting a tactical nova shotgun, still pondering a few things. It would probably be wise to stick with the same shotgun I shoot skeet with but at the same time since I'm gonna want a sidesaddle and maybe a mag extension it would so much easier to go for a remmy or mossberg.......

As for sights I'll probably hit the range with the ghost rings and do some drills where I have to shoulder the gun and fire X rounds in X seconds. If I cant acquire quick enough I might get a smith to hack the sights off and replace em with a bead but well see.


So as you can probably tell still confused, opinions welcome!!!!:confused:
 
Really -- these are preferrable sight pictures? For a shotgun, in the hands of a shotgun shooter?!

When using a ghost ring do you close one eye or shoot with both open? I am learning to shoot clays with both eyes and ignoring the bead. One advantage is wider peripheral vision. Since most GRS I have seen are protected with wings on each side, how does that affect peripheral vision?
 
Both open is better, IF your Dominant eye and hand are on the same side. Then, the other eye can add peripheral vision AND better depth perception.

That is the ticket. Forget the ghost ring. From what I read and understand, any encounter with a bear is going to be at short range and, if the animal is moving toward you, may well be at high speed (a big bear can be moving nearly as fast as one of those clays),
Under those conditions, it seems to me that you'd want to keep things as simple as possible. Point and shoot. Nothing needed but a bead, if that.
