Help indentifying this rifle

I picked this up from a guy. His instructions from the wife "do not bring it back to the house". The left side of the receiver says Mod 88, Cal. 7mm. The receiver ring is stamped 2,4gB.S.P. Under that stamping is an underline with St.m.G. The top of the receiver ring is stamped C.G. Haenel Suhl 1907. There is no country crest of any kind, so I do not think it is a Commission 88 carbine.

Thanks for the help, Jeff

Sorry, could not get the photo to upload.

After Germany went to the 1898 Mauser, Haenel and others reworked a lot of surplus 1888s for commercial sale. The 1911 Alfa catalog shows just what you describe, a refurbished 1888 carbine, available in 7mm and 9mm as well as 8mm. It cost 95 marks vs 150 for a '98. They made some quite handsome sporters, too. Those were followed by the model 1909 which retained the split bridge and forward bolt handle, but had Haenel's own design of flush magazine.

The alphabet soup is a proof marking.
The gun is rated for 2.4 grams (37 grains) of BSP powder and a steel jacketed bullet. Presumably the old standard 175 grain.
