Help in identifying a rifle

Bought this from a friend who needed some quick cash. This is a percussion cap rifle with brass inlay in the stock and the initials S.C.C. in the left side of the stock. The receiver plate below the action says " J & H Meachum & Co., Warranted". It is an octogon barrel and is actually in good shape. Trying to figure out what this is and its value (seeing if it was worth the cash or if I just helped out a friend) When I try to search for Meachum, the only thing that comes up is E. C. Meachum from St. Louis

Thanks in advance for any help! For anyone who already saw this in the C & R forum, I moved it to here as suggested.

Tim

I can't find anything on it even when I spell it right, J&H Meacham.

There was a drum and bugle company of that name but I doubt they dealt in rifles or even locks.

I found a reference to a J Meacham Hardware in New York. The lock could be a replacement and the gun could have been converted from flint.

Spelling apparently isn't my strong suit even when looking at the word. I'll keep searching but I expect this will just become a wall hanger in the home office.

I've found a bit of information on a J&H Meacham and Co located in Albany, New York, in the 1840s.

They appear to have been a general goods store, and may have sold military and musical equipment.

Hey Tim. What a rare find. A honest to goodness real B/P museum piece. Gee's I should be so lucky. In 175 years from now. I wonder if my T/Cs will be worth anything? I suppose not.:( Maybe I'll take them with me.:D Tight fit in there with me no doubt.~~:p

Try this. I believe that is an I not a J...

MEACHAM, I. & H.— Albany, N. Y. Makers of pinned-barrel, flint-
lock muskets for the State of New York.
