Help, I'm about to purchase a 1911

I've owned .45's before and am quite fond of the round. However, I've never owned a model 1911 style pistol. Can anyone tell me where I can find the differences between the different series of guns (ie. 70 series vs. 80 series vs. 1991A1, etc...)
