Help identify the mystery 44.

Spotted what I presume to be a fairly old S&W 44. in a pawnshop a year or so ago. It's still there, since the owner is asking a new gun price and I problems with that...

This gun is a 2 inch 44. Special, in stainless, with a round butt and adjustable sights. The really striking thing about it is that the end of the barrel flares -- not only is the front sight blade quite large, but the bottom of the barrel is flared also. It reminds me of the old Cadillacs with huge tail fins. (Yeah, I know, I'm giving away my age.)
How old is this thing, and is it worth the $475 the pawnbroker wants for it? It appears to be in good condition. Is it old enough to be a collector's item? What is the model number?

Does it have a model number on the frame under the crane/yoke? As Phred said it is probably a Lwe Horton and a model 624. If it is there were 7000 of them manufatured in 1986/87. Four seventyfive isn't outrages but it is no bargain either. It is one of those deals if you like and want it then it is worth the price. Go for it.
