Help identify my new AK?

I picked up a new AK today. It appears to have been totally professionally refinished. The entire gun is freshly blued and had very high quality wood furniture on it stained in red. Looks like a 'Russian' AK.

I know that is is Romanian, but that's all I know. It's not a WASR. It has the stamped receiver with dimples. The only marking on the gun is the triangle with arrow, year, and serial on the trunnion. The serial on the trunnion and dust cover both match. There are no import markings on it or even caliber markings(it is 7.62). It does have a threaded barrel with nut on it and the accessory lug on the gas block.

The trunnion markings look identical to this one:

Except mine is 1972 CC49XX

I'll try to get some pictures up a little later. Does anyone know what model this is? I looked up all the SAR and WASR specs, but I can't really find anything that I can say is really correct.

If you need any more details, please let me know.

I think thats an ishevsk triangle arrow indicating russian manufacture. If its not all russian then you have something built out of a russian kit

Overall the gun appears to be very good quality. There is a little bit of mag wobble, but I'm not terribly concerned about it. The safety is a little tight, I think due to the refinishing. I've been working it back and forth to try and loosen it up a little bit. The trigger has a little bit of creep, but it's very smooth and fairly light. The quality of the wood is great. I'm really happy with it so far, I just wish I knew what it actually was!

My Arsenal SGL21-61 is being delivered to my FFL on Wednesday. I was hoping to get them out to the desert for some shooting this weekend, but I'll be out of town. Hopefully next week!

The AKM was a modernization of the original AK-47 that came out in the late 1950's, and it's the most ubiquitous version of the AK out there. There were a few different changes, but the biggest difference is the use of a stamped steel receiver in place of a milled steel receiver.

I'm by no means an expert on AK's, but the only common Romanian version I know of being imported today is the WASR, but I believe the gun should would have WASR stamped into the receiver. If your gun is in fact Romanian, then it's likely an SAR-1. I don't know much about these, but from what I can tell they were made from the get-go with a double stack magwell and the proper dimples in the receiver, like your gun has. I don't believe they are available anymore.

I was thinking it may be a SAR series as well but the info I found on them said that they did have the threaded barrel. I suppose that could have been added after though.

As I am trying to get into an AK myself I dont have any knowledge to offer. I do want to let you know it looks great. Did you get it from gunbroker or something?

looks like its a demilled 1972 parts kit build the sar was a civilian model that used a different numbering system. at any rate looks like it was finished well looks nice.
is the barrel nut welded on? and do you see any markings on the receiver at all might check under the grip.

Nope, not welded on.

Nothing on the receiver that I can see. I'll check under the grip when I get home today.

My guess would be a Romy G. Used by their civil guard given to civilians in case the Russians attacked during the cold war. See if there is a G on the left side of the front truiniun but allot were sanded off.

Thanks for the input guys. I went to pick up my new Arsenal today and put 45 rounds through the Romanian while I waited for them to get the paperwork done. The gun shot quite well. It's an indoor range and the run only goes back 75 feet(25 yards). I was able to keep about a 3 inch group just going for head shots. It seemed to shoot just a hair low and left, but I didn't do any adjustments to the sights. Good shooting gun though.

Once I got home with the Arsenal, I compared them and... WOW!

There is no comparing the two. I am extremely impressed with the build quality on the Arsenal. Fit and finish is spectacular. Everything fits together the way it's supposed to. Nothing is too tight, nothing is too loose. After trying all 12 of my magazines, every one of them fits perfect and tight. NO mag wobble. I thought a little was normal as with the Romanian pictured above, but this Russian/Arsenal is perfectly tight. The sight picture looks to be a bit more precise too.... although I think I'm actually going to put Tech-Sights on the gun, we'll see. I haven't made up my mind on that part yet.

If anyone has considered an Arsenal, but was a bit deterred by the price point... let me put your mind to rest. This thing is amazing. I just thought all AK's were sloppy and loose and that's just how they worked. I was really surprised by how few tooling marks there are on the gun... just a little bit on the trunnion, but you really have to look.

I'll get a few pics up a little later, but here's one I snapped after getting home with the 2 guns together. This was just done with my cell phone, so nothing special.
