Help I think my 870 has gone full retard!

I picked up a used remington 870 from this guy I know for $130.00

I noticed after I got home that there is some play in the barrel.

That is you can turn the barrel left to right just a tad bit. There is not play at all up down left or right only in turning it.

I have the magazine cap on tight and it has about 1/8 of an inch of play in it.

Should I worry? Should I just shoot it and not care?

Should I go back and kick this guy in the nuts for selling me a messed up 870 for $130.00?

Is this only while bolt is open or closed as well?
On a mossberg, the locking lug would take up alot of slop. Is it an "M" designated receiver? I don't know if the locking lug is different size on the "M" or not though as I am one of them tossberg guys!

good point I will look into that when I get home.

If there is still some movement when the bolt is forward should I care?

It is an older 870 that has been used. I dont think it is completly ragged out yet.

I checked it with the bolt forward. It has less play. However with the magazine tube cap removed, the barrel will slide right out of the recieve with the bolt forward.

All I do is take the magazine cap off and then tilt the gun down and the barrel slides off.

What should I do?

PM/email Scattergun bob for one... he has a lot of 870 info IIRC...
Dave McC as well...
I have no hands on knowledge of the 870 platform... just what I glean from the boards...

I've never used an 870, but it sounds like your barrel isn't on all the way. Try moving the action around while pushing (not forcing) the barrel towards the receiver.

Rem 870 loose barrel

I have an 870 wingmaster with just a few hundred rounds thru it- barrel wiggles slightly with no cause for concern

Try this....

Using a padded set of channelocks, tighten the mag cap ONE click tighter than hand tight. See if that takes out the slop.

If your 870 is one of the newer ones sans detents, about 1/8 turn.

If not, find a good smith.

Without the cap shouldnt the bolt lug keep the barrel from sliding off? Maybe look at the bolt and carrier?

Good question,

Shouldn't the bolt and extractor keep the barrel from just sliding off?

Is my extractor needing to be replaced?

I take care of 24 870P Shotguns that get used and abused.
From the initial statement I would say there is nothing wrong with this SG. Then I am not there to do a physical inspect on it. Break it down all the way give it a good cleaning inside the receiver. Scrub up the bolt then scrub down the trigger assembly . When re assembling make sure you wipe down the inside of the magazine tube cap and the threads to the tube. Make sure the shell stops are solid. Then re assemble.
I think you will find that grit hidden where people dont clean can give that looseness feel.
Good Luck

When the gun is in battery the locking block goes into the recess in the barrel extension and will not let the barrel slide off in a properly functioning 870 when the magazine cap is removed. The extractor has no function as far as barrel retention. The gun is in battery if you have to use the action bar lock or pull the trigger to release the slide.

870

The play in the barrel could be that the locating tab on the front of the ejector is broken.
The tab is ment to keep the barrel from twisting and if the mag cap does not tighten down fully this could be the cause if the tab is broken.
These is a small cut in the breach end left side of the barrel, bad thing is the ejector needs to be replaced with the rivets, most times the ejector spring can be saved, i think we charge $65.00 for the parts and labor.

sounds like it is not locking up.the locking block may be missing.I have a couple of 870s and the barrel should not fall off.you have to retract the handle some for it to unlock then you can slide the barrel off.
dont shoot it till you know.

I tried a different barrel on it and it does the same thing.

It was a brand new barrel from a nother 870.

Is it good to go? Should I not worry about it?

If you cycle the action and have bolt in forward action locked condition, the barrel should not come off if the 870 has a locking lug. I do not know the 870 but I expect it has some sort of locking lug as a simple mag tube cap is not a secure mounting platform for shooting.
The mossberg barrel is locked in until the action is slid open and lug released.
