Help! How to with 'new' Baby Browning...

I just recently aquired a Baby Browing 25acp that was my grandfather's. My father passed away recently and so this little pistol is now mine. I even have the original box it came in...looks to be a low serial # for those that came into this country. Thankfully whoever last stowed it probably oiled it well and it is in absolutely mint condition. Beautiful little blued gun.

Why do I need help???

I don't have a manual for it and Browning is taking their sweet time sending one...arrrgh. Can anyone tell me how to take this little gun apart (field strip) so that I may clean and refresh it. Maybe I'm just 'gun stupid' but I can't figure the darn thing out.

Can I safely shoot modern ammo - say blazer or such in it. I do NOT plan on shooting it often at all, but I'd like to a few times. I've heard the mag design wasn't the best...do the current crop (Mecgar) work any better? Anything else I should know about this little pistol? I haven't found a lot out on the web other than specs.

Would replacing the original grips with wood (will keep the original ones) be a bad idea?

I'm happy to have this because of its history...and it reminds me of my father...as I remember him showing it to me when I was so young that the gun didn't feel small or light in weight.

Thanks in advance for any help here...

Best Regards,

I'm sorry i can't send you the link or the pics since i seem to have left this on another of my PCs, at the office most likely.

Last year i acquired and too soon afterwards sold a beatiful Colt calibre 25 ACP. Both guns are similar.

I started looking for info on it, you should do the same. I remember that there's a web page, not Colt's, for older Colt models. There you will find a detailed instruction on how to disasemble the little gun. I believe though that i found this other Colt site through the company's web page.

I miss mine! Take care of it, it's a precious jewel. I'll see if i can find the stuff i must still have it somewhere.

Good luck.

Actually, the Baby Browning and the Colt 1908 .25ACP are considerably different. You are perhaps thinking of the Browning 1906, which is very similar to the Colt.

If I remember correctly, pull the slide back and lock it back with the slide lock on the left side of the frame. Turn the barrel a quarter turn,(clockwise, I think) and release the slide. The slide will move forward and off. Pretty simple once you know how.

I wouldn't fear shooting good quality ammo in this gun, but since it is a keepsake, you might just want to leave it as is. Get the MecGar mags if you can for replacement. Watch out if you have a large hand. The little slide tends to bite. Good shootin':)
