Help! HK for home defense/CCW?

At the Outdoors Festival this weekend, I got to try the HK Compact .357Sig. I was quite impressed. So, that got me to thinking. I've always thought about having a home defense gun with an attached flashlight, and naturally the Glock and HK come to mind. I prefer the HK just for having an added manual safety for those late night fumblings (get your mind out of the gutter, folks!)

Anyway, I'd want a CCW compatible with my home weapon. So, I'm giving thought to a brace of HKs, either in .357 Sig, .40 Liberty, or .45 ACP. I've tried the .45 compact and it had considerably more torque than my Glock 30. So, I'd probably be looking at the .40 with a barrel for .357 Sig.

Any advice/thoughts/experience would be welcome.

I really enjoyed shooting the HK compact, but picked the Sig because of the lack of a safety. If I had wanted a safety like you do, the HK would have been my first choice. Great location of the lever, and a tolerable DA/SA trigger.

As far as caliber, I personally like the .40/.357, with the .40 as my main barrel. Reason for that is capacity and grip size better than the .45, and power better than the 9mm. (I plan on a Barsto 9mm barrel when they become available though)

Buzz, I'm not quite sure exactly what you are asking so I'll throw my opinon on the HK's at you.

I love em.

I have 2 in 9mm and frequently shoot my friends 40 compact. The 40 has about 20% more recoil than the 9mm but it is still very manageable.

My USPc is also my daily carry gun. I carry either in a Galco holster, IWB (rear right) or fanny pack. I cannot stress enought how well this gun "fits" me. It feels like it was made for my hand. Never had a single failure with the USP's.

The USP FUll Size is my night stand and winter when-I-have-a-jacket carry gun.

BTW, if you get the 357Sig barrel, be ready for a huge muzzle blast.

Get the USP.

As I review it, the post is a bit (yeah, right. Only a bit!) unclear. I suppose I was wanting ideas on whether the HK would make a good HD/CC weapon and any experiences people have had with the compacts. Sorry that it didn't come across that way. It's one of those days at work. :(

I have both the full size and compact HK USP pistols (both in .40). I keep the full size in my dresser and the compact under the front seat of my truck for CC. I think the HK USP compact makes a great "car gun" or, if you live in a cool environment (where a jacket can be used for concealment), would make a good carry piece. Unfortunately, I feel that the HK USP compact is a bit chunky for CC in warmer climates. Personally, I'm thinking of buying a Kahr MK9 for "on body" CC. Just my $.02

I have and carry the HK Compact in 357 Sig.
There is no finer weapon available and before I get flamed by the owners of the other "Plastic Pistol" there are other equally fine weapons out there.
FYI, HK does not sell .40 barrels for the 357 Sig and visa versa. After Makket barrels are available though.

I keep a HK USP ready as one of my two "house guns". The HK, specifically, is a .45 for which I keep two mags loaded - one with Golden Sabers and the other with CCI/Blazer snake shot (I live on a rocky ridge in a mature hardwood forest in central NC - prime copperhead country).

The USP is a big, ugly Kraut gun that looks like it means business - just the thing for the poachers and trespassers I tend to deal with. Having a hogleg of this size on your hip convinces even the biggest redneck peckerwoods to go on their way without argument.

As an anti-snake gun, it's ideal - much easier to tote with me when I head out with the chainsaw to cut firewood than the .410 shotgun I carried for years. The CCI/Blazer shotshells are great - they throw a tight pattern that, combined with the USP's accuracy, turns snake heads into snakeburger.

Since I carry a full size USP40 daily in South Florida, I can reccomend it and have shot a compact in .40 and like it too. The compact would be a little better I suppose, but I like the big stick theory. I second the "fits my hand like a glove" dept.

I also bought it for its 1911 style frame mounted safety, I carry it cocked and locked. It IS big and ugly and that is GREAT!!
Like GLOCKS don't like the lack of manual safety.

Go for it.
