Greetings Members,
My friend recently moved to Holland,Michigan and wants to buy a pistol.
I wanted to know if he needs a permit of some sort or needs to register it in Michigan.
Also are there any gunshops in the Grand Rapids area that he could go to. He was hoping to get a Makarov in .380.
He is a newbie to guns and a firm convert to our side so I want to make it as easy for him as possible with the process.
Thanks for your help,
Anand.

I moved out of Michigan in '93, so hopefully someone with more recent info will also reply. When I lived in MI you had to go to your local Sheriff's dept and get a 'purchase permit' before going to dealer/show. After making said purchase, you have to go back to local Sheriff and register new toy. At least that was how it was 7+ years ago.

FYI--It is easier to get a tooth pulled than to get a CCW in Michigan.

State law requires you to obtain a purchase permit from either your local PD or Sheriff's Department, have it notorized and then buy the pistol. No FedCheck check needed, that is done when you make application for the PP, the PP is a three part form, one copy gets stapled to the 4473 the other two forms go with the buyer. In some areas the permit will be issued while you wait and others will have you come back to pick it up. Most departments charge $5.00 for the service. Some more. The permit is good for 10 days after being issued so your friend has a limited window to work in.

After picking up his new pistol, he has to return to the issuing department with the pistol and the remaing two copies of the PP for an "safety inspection". The department fills out another form, three part, (your friend will get to write a lot of the stuff on the form) and he'll get back one copy of the form and his pistol.

If your friend has moved to Kent County and wants to get a CCW, tell him he will have a better chance of walking to Europe than getting one in Kent. That county has the lowest number of issued CCW permits of any of the counties in the state, unless you donate big $ to the Prosecutor, Sheriff etc.
