Here in the land of Lincoln we have what is known as a F.O.I.D.
(Firearm Owners I.d.) Citisens living in Illinois must have one of these to purchase firearms and ammunition. Problem is politicians now decide who can and cannot have one.

Now I have a good friend, who I grew up with, who is ineligible because 40 years ago he beat the snot out of another kid who stole some of his stuff and was convicted of an assault & battery felony.

Does anyone know how to rectify this situation for a 56 year old law abiding citisen, without having to pay the expense of a lawyer?

Did he beat him up when he caught him stealing his stuff or did he go after the kid after he knew his stuff was stolen rather than notify police? If it's the latter then he's probably not the kind of guy who should be carrying, and you'd have a hard time convincing any authorities that if something like that happened again he wouldn't shoot the kid instead of beat him up. It's too bad but even if someone learns from a mistake one bad mark on your record can affect your whole life. I don't know of any way to clear your record without the use of a lawyer.

If it was a felony conviction, the fact that you are in Illinois is irrelevant. Federal law prohibits him from possesing a firearm.

He'll need to get the conviction removed from his record. That will involve him contacting an attorney who specializes in criminal work. He's a convicted felon, it won't be easy nor cheap to clear that up. They'll do a check of any problems he's been involved in since that time. Once his attorney gets the paperwork done then they'll have to get a court order to get the conviction removed, provided the court agrees to remove it. It's rare to have a felony conviction removed.

Good point. I might add that it may be further difficult to find a judge in Illinois that would be compassionate to any argument made to expunge the felony from this guy's record. Odds are pretty stacked against it.

This a good example of how the errors of our ways went we were younger comes back to bite us in our @ss later in life. A lesson many of the youth of today should take note of.
