Help feed my new Mark II Ruger Gov't .22

I was hoping someone has some advice as to which .22 shell they have had the best luck with target shooting and plain plinking.

Also, can anyone confirm these have a 1 in 15 twist instead of 1 in 14?

Any help is appreciated. :)

Ditto to Bullwhip's question. My Mark II Government Target model tends to jam on the second round when I shoot subsonic ammunition. The high velocity of any particular brand does not do this. Do you folks think this is a MAGAZINE problem or an AMMO problem? Secondly, why the second round? (The first is chambered manually, and rounds three through eight or nine feed smoothly.) I'm new to rimfire, but not to larger caliber semi-autos.

For plinking, I use Winchester Wildcat. For serious target work, I use Lapua. In order to get the most out of a Mark II, you need a trigger job.

Two young 'smiths I know did a test on 20 or so types of ammo. These two are real serious. They weighted radom rounds from bricks and picked the best from each.THE WINNER * *
...............RWS( ALSO they were w/in
0.5 milligrams )
SECOND ahead of lots more high dollar rounds
...................PMC Scoremaster, at 1/5 th cost.
Test done with one stock 6 7/8 Comp. Stainless and two highly modified guns. One has a 15 in. alm. shrouded brrl.
(Mine does < 0.5 in.at 25 yards from bag)
....best....dewey

I have a Ruger Mark 2 target pistol and i had trouble with it jamming. the guy who owns the indoor range i go to said to use winchester super X bullets. i did and have not had a problem since.,they have a copper coating. get the regular bullets not the hollow points. i had trouble with the hollow points jamming also.good luck, john

I have a ruger mk II target and it shootes everything good. I have tried all different types of ammo with it. it even shoots good with that cheap Wallmart Federal hollow point ammo. I have never had it jam with any typ of ammo hollow points or regular. good luck

Hi, Larry C,

The low power ammo is probably blowing the bolt of the Ruger back just enough to pick up the next round, but not enough to bounce off the bolt stop. This means that there is little forward momentum to the bolt. The second round still has high magazine spring tension so is a little harder to move than the others. Everything is right on the edge.

Keep to the ammo that works.

Jim

I agree with Jim Keenan.

Also, there is a certain trend in Ruger
pistols of recent production: failure to extract empty shells from time to time.
I had no problems with my first Ruger MKII
I bought 5 yeas ago. I had this problem with
my second Ruger MKII I bought 2 years ago.
I know some other people who have the same
problems with new Rugers. I fixed the problem
my decreasing tension of recoil spring approx. 15%. For some reason Ruger started
making MKII with recoil spring that seems to
be a bit stronger than it used to be 5 years
ago. It leads to occasional trouble with any ammo except real hot (Stingers and stuff...)

really

My MK512 does not jam anymore. I found that white lithium grease on the rod inside the spring on the bolt and dry, clean wiped magazines do the trick. I now clean the gun whenever convenient rather than each shoot and it never quits.

For general shooting I use the 550 rounds for $9.00 Federal bulk ammo at Wal-Mart. For increased accuracy I use CCI Mini Mags. I can't afford enough of the other stuff to do a good comparison.

I shoot IHMSA silhouette and did a little test of the 3 guns I use in that. and found that each gun liked diffrent ammo. browning buckmark liked rws target anschutz liked winchester t22 and my TC liked federal match. If I were to choose one ammo to use in all my guns it would be winchester supper x power points because they are accurate affordable reliable (in my guns) and do a good job on small varmits I would stay away from the el cheepo stuff since in my tests good ammo shot about 1" groups el cheepo shot about 5" groups also cheep stuff dosn't go bang all the time. hope this helps.

I found that SuperX and Golden Bullet brands are very reliable. Zappers are too big to feed reliably in any of my guns, incl. revolvers!

What is that lithium grease you mentioned and where'd I get any?

Jim Keenan, what you said makes perfect sense. Thank you a lot, and I will try to use your advice. Question: Would a brand new magazine help this problem?
