Help! Factory Taurus rosewood grips. The screw doesn't fit???

I just got my Taurus rosewood grips in the mail today for my M85 UL. I noticed right away that the screw that came with it didn't seem like it would work.

The screw is about 7/8" long and has threads on the first 1/2" of length, then the rest up to the head is smooth. It will only screw into the grip 1/2". The rest sticks out and won't go in any further. Did they give me the wrong screw or am I doing something wrong??

Well, the 2 sets of Rosewood grips for an 85 that I got from Taurus did not even come with screws. Personally, I've had bad luck getting correct parts shipped from them, on a few occasions, so I decided just to do it myself.

The threads in the grips are a very unusual size: 5x40. A machine shop I deal with identified the size, but didn't have any proper screws. I couldn't find ANY locally, so I tapped the threads on the grips out to 6x40, bought a 6x40 SS screw, turned the head down to fit in the grip, and cut to the proper length. It's a pretty fast job, if you've got the tap and a dremel (to modify the screw). Otherwise, I'd give Taurus a call.

Like J.R. , my grips did not come with a screw.

Unlike J.R., not being that mechanically talented, I didn't try to make my own.

So I called Taurus about the screw. They mailed me one right out for $1...............plus $4.95 for shipping.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll have to call Taurus tomorrow.

Is there anyone who has a set of Taurus rosewood grips that came with a screw that fit correctly?
What is the screw supposed to look like?

My rosewood grips have identical screw holes on each half. The factory rubber grip had a screw hole on only one side. Is the screw on the wood grips supposed to go all the way through into the threads of the other grip? It seems like that would look kind of weird having the end of the screw visible through the hole on one side of the grip??
Can anyone explain how it is supposed to be?

Here's what I did...........

Fret not! There is a small brass bushing that the fastening screw fits through. I simply took one of my metal drills and carefully reamed out the brass bushing until the fastening screw would pass through it and thread on to the other side of the grip. Try it; it worked for me. Let me know how it worked.

Mine also came with no screw but I used one from a set of old Jay Scott grips that I had. It worked great.

22lovr,
I considered that option, but I don't really have any tools. If Taurus isn't helpful I might try to borrow some tools and try that.

What kind of drill and what size bit did you use?

Well, I went to a local gun shop with a gun smith today and he drilled out the screw hole for me free of charge.

So, now my M85 is finally wearing its new rosewood grips. :D
