Help diagnosing misfires. . .

I was at the range shooting with a friend on saturday and we attempted to fire his Beretta Tomcat. It would fire the first round chambered and then misfire on the subsequent shot (no primer indentation on the chambered round). If the hammer was cocked back manually after the misfire it would then fire. It would also fire the round double action (after misfiring). The ammo was Winchester, and his primer strikes looked normal on the fired rounds. The gun is in excellent condition (if you can call a gun that doesn't fire half the time excellent). It just got back from a trip to Beretta for a magazine problem. Any ideas on what is going wrong? Shake

Was this pistol ever given an action job? Is the slide going fully into battery?

If I recall rightly, Tomcat has a very robust recoil spring and not going into battery is unlikely. I'd investigate the safety and see if is malfunctioning.

If there is no primer hit at all, the firing pin is not reaching the round or the hammer is not hitting the firing pin.

Like Oleg said, the safety would be the number one suspect in this case, unless the pistol had a magazine disconnect, in which case that may be the culprit. If the slide was out of battery, most likely a light hit would be detectable. Hope this helps.

The M-16 is a damn fine weapon, but your best, your most lethal and effective weapon is between your ears. Ssgt Brown, Parris Island, 3rd Bn, H co. 1984.

I love the 92/96 Series but I will not let my fondness of those weapons interfere with reason. The Tomcat has been a poor performer from the outset. There are exceptions to this rule but for the most part, I have read only dismal reviews on this pistol via the web. Beretta should either fix the problems or discontinue the Tomcat. The counter displays I have examined are horrible in terms of function. One would be much better off with a snub-nosed .38 Special until Beretta works out the imperfections.
