Stock Dent -

The best thing is to take it to a good stockmaker! Be sure you see some of his work. A good gun repairman or a man who is a genius-grade barrel maker on the lathe is not always a good stockmaker.

To do-it-yourself, use google, or your favorite search system, and you can get all sorts of info on refinishing gunstocks. Read up on it and have your "repair" all planned out. The basic fix I've used several times for dents is to cover the spot with a wet cloth and use a medium-hot clothing iron to steam the dent out. The steam will lift the wood fibers, if you are patient.

Go slowly, don't try to lift or expand all the dent out at one time. You might "blister" the wood. Do it two, three, four times, whatever it takes. You'll probably have to spot-finish the area or refinish the stock as a final step.

I am not a gunsmith or a professional stockmaker but, working on a hobby basis, I've done this successfully several times but YMMV! Please read up on the technique and have all the tools and materials on hand before starting.

Good Luck!

I agree with GrayBear's technique as it will raise the dent and you will have to refinish the spot. You probably will not be able to match the factory finish, so it will look a little different. After all it is a rifle that is made to travel in the field and woods to use for hunting. Sooner or later you will get a ding in a stock.

one little tip to add

I would do as suggested, but I wring out most of the water before I add the iron to the cloth which can help cut down on the amount of finish that is messed up when you are done.

Also, once you get it ironed out, use a product called Arrow's Wood Finish and some 400 grit sandpaper to rub it dry and you should be able to spot repair it without any troube. It will also fill in any of the dent that you cannot iron out as I have had quite a few that I needed to sand out or fill to make a complete fix. The Arrow's is the best thing I have ever found that can fix or repair a bad spot on any type of finish. Here's a link to it:

Best of luck with it.

Thanks for the help guys, i got about 80% of it out. You can barley notice it. And to add to that the finish is still good on that spot!
The gun has alot of sentimental value to me. It was my high school graduation present and since winchester stopped making them i just prefer to keeper in good shape. Most of my guns are in almost new condition just because i like to take very good care of them in hopes that they will out last me.
