Used Ruger Security Six - $270
Used S&W Model 65 - $280
Used S&W Model 66 - $319
Used 686+ - $420
New Ruger SP101 - $390

All are in good condition. Heard good things about all of these. Any one a standout, though? Thanks

It would help if we knew your intended use(s)

Range gun? Concealed Carry? Home protection?

I lean toward Smiths due to better actions.:)
I much prefer adustable sights, also. I'd go with:

M-66
Security Six(stainless,yes?)
M-686
M-65
SP101

I feel the 686 should be had for under $400 and the SP for closer to $350.

Get the S&W model 65 first; then the 66. All the other's
can fall into the order you choose!:) :D

What is the condition of the particular used guns? If it's as good as any of the rest, I'd get the M66, which I feel is the best all-round sidearm ever made, unless you need to shoot a lot of .357 ammo. Then, I get the M686, but that price is too high.

Smiths have better trigger actions than Rugers and better resale value. They're usually finished better, too, and command more respect among serious handgunners.

Lone Star

P.S. I've owned every gun you mentioned, if that qualifies my commentary.

Thanks for the replies. I was leaning towards the 65 or 66. Based on your replies, that seems to be a safe, top 2 pick of everyone.

My favorites on the list are the 66, Security Six and 686. The 66 would be my first choice because of the price and performance.

Cheers!

I have a S&W 65LS w/3" barrel and a S&W 586 w/6" barrel. I absolutely love both. I don't have firsthand experience with the others but wouldn't hesitate to buy any of them.

If condition is similar I'd go with the used Ruger or the 65 simply because they are less money than the others. While adjustable sights have their strengths I think the fixed sights of the 65 are fine and the cost savings puts it over.

If you will do a lot of shooting with the 110gr and 125gr .357 loadings I'd go with the 686.

For general use I wouldn't get the SP101. It isn't much bigger than the J-frames. For general use I'd simply want the size, controlability, comfort and durability of the midsize models.

Generally, my preferences follow as such:
1) 586/685
2) 65LS
3) 66
4) 65 (if not a Ladysmith)
5) Security Six
6) SP101
