Help date recently acquired Colt Python

I scored a dandy deal on a real nice Colt Python at a local auction last weekend. It's a 4", royal blue finish, factory grips, no box or papers. Overall condition: excellent 97-98%, perfect mechanically. It's serial number is:585xx.
What I want to know is the year of manufacture and what you think it's worth. I plan on keeping this gem and shooting it with nothing more than 158gr factory loads.
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide me. Always been a S&W fan, this is my first Colt.

It's hard to value a gun unseen since many things factor into evaluating firearms. If your gun is in 98% condition it's standard value is $850 provided it has the correct wood grips.

Thank you both for the info. I'll try to get a pic up. It's a pretty thing.

Thanks again

PS, Bill, I can relate to the 'unfortunately' part, I'm a former San Diegan. Move to Missouri in '91 and haven't regreted it one bit. Can sit out on my porch and plink targets or varmits to my heart's content. No traffic, no smog. Green and beautiful countryside and closest neighbor 20 acres away. Conceal and carry permits available and you can have a loaded gun in your car's glove box if you want without worrying about going to jail for it. You might consider retiring out this way.

Mind If I Butt In?

Too Late, I just did! I just bought the following Python for under $850 at auction. The serial number is PY5978. Any information is appreciated. It is without a doubt the most beautiful revolver I have ever owned.

PY5978 was made after 1985, which is were all public info on Colt serial numbers ends.

To get a production date, just call Colt. They'll give you the date over the phone, but NO other info.

Congratulations, you now own the finest, most expensive production DA revolver ever made.
The Python really is a legend in it's own time, and is almost always the most accurate revolver of them all.

Many thanks for the information. I have never allowed myself the luxury of a Colt Python. A while back I had a heart attack and saw this on Auction Arms. I needed something to help cheer myself up and this gun did the trick... :D

Ok Bull, you thread thief you. :p Here's my pix. The afore mentioned Python we got at an estate auction for $575.00. They had a set of Pachs on it. After further investigation of the display cases to be auctioned later, I found the original set of grips and called them on it. The auctioneer's assistant went over and pulled them out of the case and gave them to me after I won the auction.
Also got a S&W 745 N.I.B, a sweet S&W 657 mountain gun and a Bushmaster Carbon 15 lady for a song. It was a very good day.
And Very nice Colt, Bull, but can you top the one in the last pic?
Freedom Arms .454 Casull

by the way, how do you make the pix appear instead of the attachment click-ons?

NP Bull, just yanking your chain :) Your's is a sweet gun and it's nice to have some knowlegable members that can let us know what we've got.

Bullrock,
That's one sweeet looking Python. And that's from someone who has never been enamored with them (Colt 1911s yes, but I prefer the Colt Troopers myself).

BPD - Nice wood on those grips! Zounds! They look like late 50's to early 60's grips! I'd take those off and stash 'em for presentation purposes and use the Pachmayrs for shooting. Any chance of getting you to post a pic of the 657 Mountain gun?

According to Fjestad's blue book, there Colt really did make the Python, albeit in very small numbers, chambered in .41 Mag. [drool] Also in .256 Win Mag, .38 special and .44 special.

Here ya go Bill,.....657 Mt. Gun NIB w/papers,.and ahem(it is F/S on auction now)

S&W 657 Mountain Gun......
And, just for kicks, a knife sheath I made a couple of days ago for a Black Jack Knives A.W.A.K. that we got @ the same auction. Man, they had some good stuff goin for pretty cheap.
Oh, and the 657 IS PRE-LOCK!!!!! NO BUTT-UGLY LOCK or STUPID KEY to have to fool with.(part of the ruination of S&W in my humble opinion)
