What rifle caliber is comparable to a 300 win mag in power? but not belted. wildcats are an option

this rifle will be custom built and will be used for anything from elk hunting to target shooting(messing around) out to 1000 yards or so

For your uses magnum power not needed, 30-06 will do everything you want and if you really want to up the ante go for .338-06

My Norwegian buddy uses a 6.5 Swede for long range competition and moose and I am seriously wanting one myself. I don't need it for nothing I just want one. :D

Hey old grump I just aquired a carl gustaf swedish mauser in that 6.5, cant wait to shoot her Ive heard great things about that round

What action are you using? As already stated the .300 WSM or SAUM has been stated I'd lean towards the WSM in this case for a short action. If you are using a long action I'd look at the .300 RUM you can usually pick them up farily reasonable. If you want a wild cat you can always build a .30-375 Ruger which will fit in your standard magnum actions easier than the RUM.

I haven't done one yet but the 300 Dakota is a non belted case and I think Midway has brass, it's expensive.

I have all my belt mag case headspaced on the shoulders like a non belted case so make it easier reloading and I think I get a better chamber.

I've been lucky over the years I've had some pretty good gunsmith build rifles for me and it's good to get idea's from them also. I seen in one of your earlier post about looking for a gunsmith for a custom, did you find one?

I've done a total of three custom WSM have nothing against them but all my future deer/elk rifles will be build on a long action. I had the WSM build as an addition to my deer/elk rifles so they never replaced anything.

Well good luck

6.5 Swede will do the things you listed. Its not comparable to the .300mag in power, though. It is kinder to your shoulder.

6.5X.284Win is prettty popular for long range shooting, and is closer to .300mag in power.
