HELP cant get stripped allen screw out

Stripped allens

I'd soak 'em with Kroil and leave 'em overnight, then insert the appropriate size screw remover and twist 'em out.

Screw removers come in sets; I bought mine @ Sears years & years ago; other good-sized hardware stores should have 'em also.

In a less "tricky" place, I'd mebbe drill out the allens some more before trying the screw remover, but given the screws in question are on a 'scope mount--and 'scope, and rifle--that you don't want to mess up, if the above didn't work I'd take it to a gunsmith and let him run the risk.

Not worth making a dinged-up mess out of the rings, the 'scope, and the rifle.

I've run into this problem several times. Put a small amount of penitrating oil on the screw and let it sit for a while. Then get a Torxs driver very near the size of the hole and gently tap it in until it bites.

I think there's an article on removing stripped screws in a recent edition of American Rifleman magazine; you might want to check it out if you can.

E-Z Outs

I don't know if they still make them (they were made by the late Cleveland Twist Drill company). My dad used to work there and had some. Saved me from having to buy a new engine block once.

Despite the name, they're not easy to use, but they got the job done.

left twist bits

get a left twist drill bit slightly smaller than allen socket, using a cordless drill in reverse mode. secure the rifle in a mount type vice or cleaning stand, don't just try to hold it, once drill gets meat of screw it will come right out. This method won't impact scope and can be controled relatively easy....reason for cordless is the torque settings are more adapt, set it on low torque so you don't fly threw the mount itself.
