Help! (Before I pull a KB)

I just purchased my first 1911A1, a Systema Colt M1927. My only other semi is a Sigma which was my carry piece. I always carried the Sigma with a round chambered (you guys probably know where I'm going with this). Unloding was simple ...drop the mag. and pull back the slide. Two questions: How do most of you carry your 1911 and what is the safest way to unload it if you decide to keep one in the pipe?

There are only two reasonable ways to carry an M1911: Condition 1 (chamber full, cocked and locked), or Condition 3 (chamber empty). I don't recommend Condition 3, since it takes two hands to quickly charge the chamber and your weak hand might be busy fending off the perp. If you are uncomfortable carrying cocked and locked, consider that carrying your Sigma is sort of like carrying cocked but not locked.

Unloading a cocked and locked M1911 is quite simple. Point in a safe direction, finger off the trigger, remove the magazine, verify again that your finger is off the trigger, lower the safety, rack the slide to eject the round, lock the slide open, visually check that the mag well and chamber are empty, check the chamber with your finger to verify that it is empty.

I'm in complete agreement with M1911. If you are uncomfortable with cocked & locked you should be carrying something else.

You might get 200 more posts to this query. None could be as succinct as the response from M1911. There is no more...or less... that can be done to make you safer or more responsible.
