Subject: Your survey and website
Hi, I've been looking through your website, it's great. I've thought off and
on about getting my own permit and my own gun, and I'm looking into it more
seriously this time. I found a lot of resources on the Web, including yours,
through a website, www.starseedcreations.com, where Rick Roberts posted an
essay called TAO of gun, generated from a survey he conducted on guns and
gun control. It really affected me powerfully, I've been studying ideas of
sovereignty and other topics he brings up, but I haven't seen gun ownership
tied in with those other topics. It's part of the RKBA webring, and it made
me want to pursue this...the difficulty is in finding good resources for
women in New Jersey, once I obtain a FID and a Permit, it's only good for 90
days, to go purchase a handgun, which is where I'd like to start, maybe
getting a rifle later. Most of the sites I've been referred to give
locations or organizations elsewhere in the country. I found a phone number
for a WSSA affiliated shotgun instructor, but it's in South Jersey, and not
at all convenient for me.
I'd like to learn from certified people, and be prepared when I go to
purchase a gun, and not have to rely solely on men. My husband isn't
interested in guns, but encouraged me to do this for Y2K, I didn't get
around to it. He has a male friend who might help me select which kind of
gun to buy, and I guess I would consult him, but I wanted to see what I
could find in the way of professional trainers, I live in Bergen County, New
Jersey, in Hackensack. I learned just enough from previous boyfriends,
starting back in high school, to know that I'm a pretty good shot, and in
recent years I even started shooting targets with a handgun, where I used to
live in New Jersey. I started out when I was 16 years old, plinking with a
.22 rifle, like a lot of people where I grew up. Did some trap shooting,
didn't do well with it back then, got freaked out by a guy, friend of my
boyfriend, loading my gun with a bigger, louder round without telling me,
and stopped going. I didn't like people with "lets scare the girl who came
along" attitude, it represented what I didn't think was right, people with
irresponsible and potentially unsafe behaviors and attitudes owning guns.
Finally, later, in college, found out that with ear protection I could
actually hit traps, when I went and did that with an older boyfriend and his
3 sons, we had fun. Did a little of that with another boyfriend, about 2
years after that. Tried handguns about 5 years ago, and though I was scared
when I began, enjoyed it. My boyfriend at the time belonged to a gun club,
and they were very interested in safety, and I saw other women there, too.
When the relationship ended on a particularly ugly note, I didn't pursue the
interest on my own.
Now, I want to learn self-defense, and learn correctly. I started to ask my
girlfriend's husband, and he was glad to try and help me, but they had some
problems a while back and because he was drinking alcoholically she asked
for a moratorium on his gun use, as an adjunct to rebuilding the marriage.
I've been hesitant to bring it up, since, although they're doing very well
now, I don't want to anger my friend by asking her husband to help me with
this if it's at all still an issue between them. He's an avid target
shooter, I'd love to go with him and learn, but I don't know if that's a
good idea.
Michelle's article about being a new gun-user was great, I've been in some
of the (mental and emotional) places she's been in, with my thoughts and
feelings about firearms. I could completely understand what she was saying.
Know of any places in this area (metro New York) I could contact for help
and education? Appreciate the info at your site, its very interesting and
includes lots of things I certainly didn't know, I only ever borrowed
someone else's guns and did a little target practice. I know what Michelle
means about her targets looking good, I used to hang mine in my elementary
school special ed. classroom, at that time, you should have seen the
reactions from different people, but the kids thought it was cool. I also
kept around the 2liter soda bottle caps I put holes through the middle of
with a rifle, and displayed them back then, I was happy about my ability.
Anyway, thanks for your help. Sincerely yours, Joan Glover
