Help a guy make a decision on a .308

I’m really torn on this apples and oranges decision between a bolt action 308, Remington 700 sps tactical………..vs…………DSArms Imbel 58

I realize the price difference that exits, but after the additional expense of a scope for the Remington that point would be would be mostly moot.

At some point I’m sure I’ll end up with both, but for now only one is affordable. Question is which would you choose, and why?

Thanks
RG

Personally I would go with the Remington. A lot of reasons but most of them are just personal choice. The biggest thing is it is a cleaner neater rifle and I like the heavy barrel. It will be easier to carry and clean and you gain nothing from all the tactical eye candy of the Imbel 58.

Just dos centavos from a dinosaur

Depends what you want....

I like taking apart semi-autos and cleaning them, marveling at the design.

I also go hunting, where the reliable accuracy and easy maintenence of a bolt action is important (to say nothing of the weight).

Then there is reloading, where a bolt action is much more tollerant of different loads. If you are on a budget, reloading should be a consideration.

Thanks for the suggestion Gunmkter, but no matter how hard I try and as illogical as it is I just cannot get past the sheer ugliness of the FNAR. I know guns are tools and aesthetics should mean diddly.....but :barf:

I had this same dilemma. I was looking at a SA58 from DSA with a medium contour barrel for the longest time. I also wanted to get a bolt action somewhere along the way.

Eventually I saved up enough for the FAL, and sat on the cash for a while, waiting for the timing to be right. I then walked into my LGS with my brother, and saw the beauty I walked home with that day, a Steyr-Mannlicher SSG-04.

I wanted both, but the Steyr was there and ready to go, whereas the FAL would have taken 6 to 8 weeks and the whole FFL transfer spiel.

I'm saving up again for the FAL though. I'll have both, one way or another...

So basically whichever opportunity creeps up first, go for it since you're gonna have both eventually anyway. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

If you plan on having both eventually, go ahead and get the Imbel now. You will never, ever have a problem finding a Remington 700 in 308 in the future. They might even have a new model in the future that you might want more.

What he said. If your dead set on both of them and you KNOW your going to buy both get the 58 first then get the Remington. Besides its soo much funner to just pull a trigger, with the bolt action you have to take time to lift that little lever thinggy taking time away from shooting. (words of my gf when I asked her what gun she wanted to use for p-dog hunting) :D

I would also prefer the Remington for hunting, but what do I know. I even had to look up Ibel to ID your options. It is a nice looking military type weapon.

It maybe a generation gap thing, but I prefer the more conservative or sporter style rifles. I even like wood over synthetic when I know there are advantages to the newer products.

In contrast, I did like the M-16 over the M-14 in my military days.
