I am going to get a new rimfire rifle, . . .

Would those of you "in the know" please share with my your experienced opinion of why you would get a .22 LR or a .22 WMR?

Also, . . . If I do get a .22 WMR, . . . I am wondering if it also shoots .22LR.

Thanks a bunch :D

May God bless,
Dwight

Sorry, can't shoot LR in the Magnum.

What do you want to do with the rifle? For plinking, get the LR. The Mag ammo is a lot more pricey. If you are going to do some varmint hunting with it and need more power/range then the Mag may make sense.

All depends on your purpose.

I'm assuming you're not really knowledgeable about firearms. Unless you have a specific need for the power provided by the 22 magnum, I suggest the regular 22 long rifle. Cheaper ammo will make practice more economical and the 22lr is adequate for pests at short range. Additionally, 22lr ammo is universally available in some form.

I own and use both a Henry carbine .22lr and a Savage bolt action .22mag. As stated above the ammunition is not interchangeable. However in the .22lr you should also be able to use .22 long and .22 short, as long as It's not an autoloader. I use both for pest control, and find the Henry loaded with .22 short ammunition or shotloads to be effective on small varmints such as rats, or those pesky red squirrels that keep wanting to take up residence in the attic. I think it's also worth mentioning that .22 short/shotloads are considerably quieter to shoot than .22lr.
The Savage .22mag is scoped and used for larger pests at longer distance. I can attest that it will put down a rabid fox at 50yds without difficulty, but with considerably more noise/muzzle blast than the .22lr as well as the increased ammunition cost.
Not knowing what your needs are I would suggest the .22lr, I feel overall it is the more versatile and economical of the two.
That being said, the .22mag is one of my favorite cartridges, and if you feel a legitimate need for the increase in power I wouldn't hesitate to go that route instead.

Now that I think about it, I don't remember why I bought one (WMR). I do remember trying to chose between a 17 HMR and a 22 WMR, I believe the 22 WMR won out because of ft bls at 250 yards over the 17 HMR. (for small pests).

The cost of ammo $18.00 for 22 LR (500 pack), $12.00 for 22 WMR (50 pack). I have both a 22 LR and a 22 WMR and to tell the truth both do not get much use. Both are accurate at 100 yards with the 22 WMR having a slight lead at 150 yards. Since I reload, I have no issue with using 223 instead of the rimfires. (three rifles in 223). And they (223) are about 90% of what I shoot.

If it is for plinking, I would recommend the 22 LR. If for hunting small game then by all means the 22 WMR. Or you could get one of each.

Depends on its use. Plinking, gophers, squirrels or rabbits - .22LR.

Coyotes or ground hogs - .22 WMR. I would prefer a .223 or 5.56 for coyotes or ground hogs.

Thanks, folks, . . .

Jury is still out, . . . probably take in a show or two, . . . go from there.

May God bless,
Dwight
