I just got a STI Spartan in a trade yesterday and i was going to take it apart, but i cant seem to get the compensator off... I dont know if i should just treat it like a barrel bushing or what, but it has me vexed...it seems like when i try to remove it it gets stuck on the top 1/32 or so of the guide rod...

I wouldn't try to remove the comp. Just pull the slide back until the slide release can be removed, take out the slide release and ease the slide forward and off the frame.

Then you can see what's going on.

tried it

i tried it, but the guide rod binds up when i try to remove it, im thinking i should just cut/ grind about 1/8" off of it, but i dont know how that would affect the gun.

Without holding it I'm not sure how to get it off but I wouldnt cut or grind anything. Find a larger shop or local smith and see if they can help.

Did the guy you got it from know how to take it down? If you can reach him still, see if he can be of any help. If that's a dead end, find a gun smith who can help. It went together that way, it has to be able to come apart without drama.

Before you cut, grind or do something else drastic that you may regret...give STI a call and ask them for the password, secret handshake or whatever.

Pull the slide all the way back and examine the guide rod for a small hole. If you find a hole, put a paper clip in it and ease the slide forward until the disassembly notch lets you remove the slide stop. Then ease the slide off the frame.
