Hello everybody

Hello, I'm not exactly new to the forums, I've been lurking for some time now. I like a lot of what I've seen on here, other things not quiet so much. But what can you do, right? I'm retired military. I won't say what I did because when I do people either think I'm lying or just plain bragging. Either way, it's hard to be taken serious. I will say I have been involved in joint operations with other countries and have seen a lot of shots fired in anger. Both outgoing and incoming. My early experiences led me to have a general distrust for handguns in general, prefering the rifle for most situations. But I learned to love the handgun after a tour in some South American countries where it wasn't always prudent to go armed with a rifle because it tended to draw attention when it wasn't wanted. I found the handgun to be vastly superior to bare hands or blades and a lot more comforting. That being said, I hate hardball ammunition in any caliber. Hollowpoints just work so much better. Obviously holowpoints weren't always an option, but when they were I was always happier. I'm also a huge fan of the .45 acp, having personally seen its effectiveness on hostile people. Not that I have anything against the 9mm. With a good hp round it can hold its own very well. The .45 just seemed to anchor bad guys a bit quicker. But when I was in Western Europe on an exchange with an anti-terrorist group that saw a bit of action and saw what the .357 magnum 125 gr hollowpoint could do I was amazed. I've read acounts of police departments calling this round the lightning bolt round and I can see why. I saw four armed men on four different occasions hit with this round and none of them put up any kind of a fight afterwards. You can read what you want and believe what you will, but I'll trust my own eyes. Gel testing can be useful in seeing what a round may do in flesh, but like I heard someone say once, I've never been attacked by a block of ballistics gel. My personal carry weapons are pretty simple. A Colt Government model and an Officers frame with a Commander upper, both of wich have been lightly worked on. A Glock 21 and a Glock 30 for when I want a little more firepower and also because they are extremely easy to work on if needed. I also carry a pair of Ruger SP101's with 3inch barrels from time to time. And a beautiful Browning Hi Power that was given to me by a British friend that's, sadly, no longer with us. They said it was a training exercise that went bad. And regardless of what I have seen posted elsewhere in these forums, I believe no one should ever leave the house with just the ammo that's in their weapon. You might believe with all your heart that you are in a good, safe, neighborhood. But bad things can happen in the least likely of places. Especially these days. Believe me, I've seen it. And you might just find yourself in need of more than those 5 rounds in your S&W snubbie to get you out of trouble you didn't ask for. I also don't believe in taking less than two guns with me either. I'm no Rambo or mall ninja, I've just seen some weapons that checked out fine before a job give up the ghost at the worst possible moment. It was some friends in Latin America that taught me the value of a second gun. It's also a lot quicker than reloading if it comes to that. In all my weapons I use hollowpoints exclusively for defense. Just a little history as my way of saying hello and to let those interested (Although, why anyone would be is a mystery to me) know where I stand on things up front. Thank you.

I'll say a hearty welcome too...

now with that said, a bit of advice.

Paragraphs (tab and return key) can be your friends....

A man after my own heart...it kind of brings a tear to my eye...:) The .357 is and has been my favorite and is the choice for my daily carry. Although I own several other revolvers and semi's, my Rossi 462 (named "Marvin") is my fishing-hunting-camping and daily companion. Welcome to the fold.

Great post wheelgunner357 and welcome. The 45ACP is my favorite round but the 357 is close second. That being said I believe it to be the best practical manstopper, but I prefer semi-autos. So I favor a 1911 45 ACP. However, I completley agree about carrying 2 guns and would like to have a 357 (Model 60 3inch) as a back up. Sadly, I do not at the moment.

Welcome, Wheelgunner. This is a great firearms forum. Just remember to have thick skin and be prepared to hear about how much you need a Glock!!:p:D

WELCOME to TFL!!

And enjoy the forum! I hope you will find answers to any questions you have, share relevant experience, and enjoy the discussions. ITs what we do here, as best we can.

The ballistics gel was a good comment. Immediatley got a mental image of hiding behing a car as a 6ft gelatin block coming at me and shooting it just watching my 45's hits and slow down inside. I would keep shooting but if balistics gel comes after me I will run in absolute terror lol.

I used to like the .357.....until I fired several cylinders full at a wild pig without hearing protection.......screw that! My ears rang for days.
My current handgun collection is a Glock 21 and a S&W Model 10. I think the ol' .38 is a way under-rated caliber.
I must say though, it's nice only having to buy a couple of calibers rather than several.
Welcome aboard.

Greetings wheelgunner357, thanks for your service and welcome aboard. Happy to have another lurker into the light.

welcome

It was interesting to read your post.
I carried the 357 on duty for years-also the 45ACP and 9mm,and I do prefer the 45 for indoors as a house gunn because I've fired them indoors without hearing protection and it wasn't half bad.I wouldn't want to do that with a 357,plus the flash from a 125 is blinding when it comes to a follow up shot.
The 357 is hard to beat outdoors.
+1 on the Hi-Power-love 'em-I got a Capitan,a Mark IIIS,(both 9's) and a 30 Luger version.Try getting spare mags for that:(
