I am going to buy a 30-06 rifle. I want a 24" bbl. Any recomendations? I'm leaning too the Weatherby Accumark. Any comments on this rifle? Thanks, Terry(gunbuyer's wife husband)

My usual "advice" is to feel and fondle everything in your price range--within your parameters of barrel length and such--and pick the one which feels best to you. If it's "purty", so much the better.

As near as I can tell, almost any modern rifle can be made to shoot well. That being so, the intangibles take on a little more importance...

Terry,
Look at the Remington 700. BUT I CAUTION, stay away from the DBM (detachable box magazine) version. The darn thing does not shoot. I had one in 30.06 and another person here at TFL had a friend that had one in .260 and it wouldn't shoot either. I even had a 'smith do a bunch of work on it and still no go. The regular BDL's should work fine. They have great triggers that can be smoothed to your satisfaction. I've never been much of a fan of Weatherby but always thought "why spend so much for a Weatherby just to shoot a standard cartridge". Maybe my thoughts are wrong. Also, look at Savage. They make darn good rifles for alot less money than Remington or Weatherby.

Heavy-barrel 30-06?
Have you thought about a Ruger 1B? They have 28" barrels but at the overall lenght of a 22"-24" repeater rifle... And the barrel is a semi-heavy contour. People tend to have a "you love 'em or you hate 'em" relationship with these guns, but if you're one of the "love 'em", go for it!
Cheaper than Weatherby.... And a classic look to boot!
