The Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) is "The Premier Firearms-Rights and Pro-Liberty Organization in Virginia". It was founded in October 1994 as the Northern Virginia Citizens Defense League (NVCDL). The group experienced enormous growth in membership state wide and was incorporated as VCDL in May of 1998. VCDL is a non-partisan, grassroots organization dedicated to defending the civil rights of all Virginians. The membership considers the Right to Keep and Bear Arms to be an essential civil right.
The collective efforts of the NVCDL membership were instrumental in passing the Personal Protection Act, which reformed Virginia's Jim Crow era discriminatory concealed weapons law. Now, it is possible for any decent, law-abiding Virginian to carry a concealed handgun for personal protection after obtaining a concealed handgun permit.
Public meetings are scheduled for the following dates:
July 20, 2000
September 13, 2000
October 18, 2000
November 15, 2000
The meetings start at 8 pm and last 60-90 minutes. The meeting location is:
Mason District Government Center & Police Station
6507 Coumbia Pike
Annandale, VA
Call 703-256-8035 for directions.
Past meetings have featured guest speakers such as local pro-RKBA politicians and Neal Knox.
We will probably be discussing the strategy to remove the prohibition on concealed carry permit holders from carrying in restaurants. This has been a hot topic of discussion recently in the Washington Post, Washington Times, and local talk radio shows. In the newly-elected Republican General Assembly last session our legiscritters tabled (aka killed) a bill that would have allowed permit holders to carry concealed in restaurants, preferring instead to create a committee to "study" the issue. VCDL is working now on a strategy to hold these guys accountable for that.
Note that the next meeting is this Thursday night.
