Allen Flip-Flops on Gun Control

In Virginia's US Senate race, a major flip-flop on a hot-button issue; gun control.

Republican candidate and former governor George Allen has come out in favor of extending the nationwide ban on assault weapons. The switch might cost him support.

Guns-rights groups are blasting Allen for changing his position.

9 Eyewitnesss News Reporter Gary Reals reports analysts say the reason Allen changed his mind was because polls probably showed him vulnerable to Robb on this issue.

Analysts also say the flip-flop most likely won't change an Allen supporter's vote anyway. Allen says he agrees with the Republican party stance that existing gun laws should be enforced.

Allen's Public Support For Gun Control Virginia

Say it ain't so, George!
-- Does former Gov. Allen really support the Clinton-Feinstein gun ban?
ACTION: Please call or write the George Allen for U.S. Senate campaign. Ask him where he stands on repealing the Clinton-Feinstein gun ban of 1994. Please use the pre-written letter and the contact information below.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE (Thursday, September 14, 2000):
A. Shocking Revelation From Gov. Allen
Many Virginians were shocked yesterday when they read that former Gov. George Allen is supporting the 1994 Clinton-Feinstein ban on certain household firearms.

The Washington Post quoted Allen yesterday as saying that he would leave in place the ban on more than 180 types of semi-automatic firearms and magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

Allen, who is running against Sen. Chuck Robb (D) for the U.S. Senate, said that, "I would not repeal the existing ban.... I would vote to continue the existing law."

GOA called the Allen office yesterday and confirmed this quote with them.

B. Allen Press Release Plugs Gun Control
Allen issued a press release this week which stated that, "My main goal is to fight crime and drugs, control criminals, enforce the many existing gun laws, and not infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their families."

Read that again. Allen wants to "enforce the many existing gun laws." His statement above is a contradiction. One can't enforce existing gun laws and not infringe people's rights. Gun control IS AN INFRINGEMENT of our 2nd Amendment rights.

C. Gun Owners Must Make Their Voices Heard
GOA encourages ALL pro-gun activists to contact the Allen office! Please call or write the campaign office and ask Allen to oppose ALL self-defense infringements.

Make sure the Allen campaign knows that kissing off pro-gun voters is a dangerous gambit. Urge him to stand up for the 2nd Amendment.

----- Pre-written message -----
Dear Gov. Allen,

When Gun Owners of America told me you were supporting the 1994 Clinton-Feinstein gun ban, I was quite shocked. In The Washington Post did you really mean to say you would "not repeal the existing ban" on certain household firearms?

Please tell me it's not so. The Second Amendment protects the right of all decent Americans to keep and bear arms. The Amendment states that this precious right "shall not be infringed."

That is why I must respectfully disagree with your position on the draconian gun laws that are already on the books. It is impossible to enforce the existing gun laws and, at the same time, to respect the rights of law-abiding citizens. Anti-gun restrictions ARE INFRINGEMENTS upon my God-given right to defend my family and myself.

Just think what could have happened if the Clinton-Feinstein ban was in place during the Los Angeles riots of 1992. When the police and National Guard were refusing to protect the people of that city, it was the Korean-Americans who used their semi-automatic firearms to defend their families and their stores.

Not surprisingly, their stores were the only ones left standing as other stores around them burned to the ground. Had the Clinton gun ban been in place, the stores belonging to those brave Koreans might have burned along with all the others.

I am concerned that if you are supporting a draconian infringement such as the Clinton-Feinstein gun ban, that you will support other self-defense restrictions once you get into office.

I hope you will stand up for the 2nd Amendment. Please don't support the unconstitutional gun bans that were signed into law by the most anti-gun President in our history. If you support gun control, you may endanger your support from gun owners. Thank you.

Sincerely,

No surprise here. From my post of 7/15/00: "I don't know of a state employee from his era who trusts ex-Gov. Allen." Can I say I told you so, or would I warned you be more appropriate? Still, what's the alternative? John

unfortunantly in the liberal WDC area,
any politician that supports sporting semi auto rifles will be crucified by the press.

Yeah, Hobson's Choice yet again.

Go ahead and vote for this bozo but don't let him know it. In the mean time, ream him a new one and hopefully give him a night of unrest. If no one gripes, he'll figure the calculated risk paid off and he'll be even less inclined to listen to you if he gets in.

Make him think he's heard the first "click".
(In some Vietnam movie, a grunt steps on one of those two-click mines - once when you step on it, the second, when you take your foot off and things go boom. That damn scene had me in a knot.)

One last time for me on this thread. I looked up Allen on Handgun Control's website and found these hysterical (as in Chicken Little) comments, and felt that in fairness to the guy, they should be posted.

The George Allen record on Guns</A>

Made Virginia a "Holster Heaven" picture of Allen's doing a 'thumbs up")
The NRA never had a better friend in Virginia than George Allen. Their wish was his command.

According to a March 27, 1997 Washington Post editorial, "What began as a modest, limited public safety effort by Fairfax County officials and their state legislators to ban arms-toting in county recreation centers and police stations has been vetoed by Gov. Allen. Given the Governor's lead role in a movement to establish Virginia as Holster Heaven, it is no surprise that he locked arms with leaders of the National Rifle Association and shot down the two bills…" (click here for the full Post editorial)

A note of irony at that address - the Post claims it is "An Independent Newspaper" (where is that barf symbol when you need it?)

Snippets from two other blurbs, equally as shrill:

Concealed Handguns (picture of a revolver tucked in someone's waistband)

In 1995, Governor Allen signed into law SB 744, an NRA initiated bill that weakened the state's carrying concealed handgun law. The new law removed all local law enforcement discretion from the process of issuing licenses to carry hidden handguns. (more)

Even in Teen Rec Centers (picture of a group of smiling teens) (I love that one)

The 1995 law that allowed almost anyone in Virginia to carry a concealed weapon did not prohibit carrying concealed handguns in teen rec centers. In 1997, the Virginia House and Senate both passed legislation, SB 763, that would close that loophole for Fairfax County rec centers.
Amazingly, Governor Allen, at the gun lobby's request, vetoed that bill. (more)

I suspect he rolled on the assault weapons position in an effort to suck up to the liberal element, not realizing it is a lost cause. So, if I was in Virginia, I'd vote for the guy, but I'd make him sweat a little via email/letter/fax.
