I ran into a really unfortunate discussion with a friend yesterday and I need your advice.
It was a reunion with an ex-girlfriend from high school at the local Friday's. As we caught-up she mentioned that she had bought a HK USP .45. I was very excited and she was telling me all about it.
However, this girl has a serious problem about guys taking advantage of her, using her and abusing her. It turns out that she was dating some gang member who coaxed her into buying this gun for him. I laughed and said that she could buy me one too. I proceeded to ask her if she wanted to go with me this weekend to buy my first handgun. I said that we could spend some time on the range and swap guns.
Then she said, "No, you don't get it. He still has it."
This guy IS a gang member who breeds pit bulls for illegal dog fights. One of his other hos slashed my friend's tires and carved "die bitch" into the side of her car and she's too afraid to try to get it back.
To make matters worse, this dude was recently arrested for malicious wounding after he got pissed and stabbed someone.
I tried to explain the gravity of her actions but she's just too scared to do anything.
What can I do?

Tack, Me thinketh you need distance from that girl. On what you have given, she has comitted a felony, is a bad security risk, needs professional counseling, will be implicated in any crime comitted with that gun.

I'd have to agree with Sam. It's only natural to want to help her, but I really don't think there's anything you can do. She got herself into this situation, she's the only one who can get herself out. And that's assuming she's even gotten to the point that she wants to get out.

although not funny, the security risk comment made me chuckle. She made it very clear the night before that she wanted to get back together. THEN I noticed this gibberish tattoed above her hind quarters--figure out for yourselves why it was exposed to begin with.
She wouldn't tell me what it was, so I packed up and left--which led to this second meeting. It was this dude's gang named tattooed on her butt.
And yes, after a few Killians at the restaurant I gave her the flight-attendant speech: This flight only allows one carry-on. Please exit the aircraft and check the rest of your baggage.
I told her that I didn't think it was healthy for us (ME) to be hanging out together. :)

Discression is the better part of valor, and sometimes, the better part of discression is exiting stage left at a high rate of speed.

She bought the gun for protection from whoever scribbled on her car. Her gangbanger "friend" then stole the gun from her.

Her word against his.

Tackdriver, by making that choice about not hanging out together I think was a wise choice. :)

WHEN IT COMES TO FRIENDS THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT

It could be she's looking for a way out....but either way its a risk for you...If you really want to know hire someone and have her checked out, criminal records, etc., ....but only you know if its worthit....fubsy.

She could be looking for a way out, she could be looking to you for protection from the gang banger or she could be using you to make him jealous. Two of these options could prove extremely hazardous to your health and safety.

Face it, any mature young woman with the slightest self respect would never date a gang banger nor assist in his criminal enterprises by illegally supplying him with a firearm. The fact that she allowed his name to be tattoed on her ass tells me that HE considers her HIS property to do with as he sees fit until he wishes to dispose of her.

This is not the same girl you dated in high school. She has made these choices herself and will have to deal with the consequences. Chances are that she is using drugs or is involved with them in some way. Do you wish to be dragged into this lifestyle?

Stay as far away from her as possible. If and when she straightens her life out, you can then reconsider if you wish to resume your friendship.

Wow, I get the same response from my friends, "Run as fast as you can in the opposite direction." I know this. I'm really not trying to hook up with her again.
Cactus, you're exactly right, she has no self-respect. She's also an idiot. I think she did it all to prove something--to whom, I have no idea.
I am a compasionate human being though and I was wondering if there was any way I could talk her into trying to get it back. However, I've decided not to get involved. Stupid has to live with her own mistakes, I just don't like the idea of another criminal with an illegal gun, especially a really nice one.
jcoy, I'm sure that this is what she has in mind, but po po is going to ask, "So, why didn't you report a stolen gun sooner?"
**I'm actually a little tempted to turn her in.

Beat feet as far from her as possible.

From my female perspective, she may only be looking to trade one dependence for another. She has some hard choices to make and I doubt she has the courage to make them.
1) The law must get involved...and that makes her an active participant as state's witness, etc. She can't just walk away, as she is tied to the gun and must involve the law to clear herself. Can she do that?
2) Is she willing to move or stay and face the potential revenge? I admit I'm rather judgemental, and I don't believe that a woman who allows a man to have his name tattoo'd on her body (or even volunteers) has sufficient self-respect and intelligence to do much of anything right.

tackdriver, the most telling comment I saw from you is that this girl is an idiot.

Let's be honest here ... sometimes guys enjoy the company of ladies whose greatest attribute is not a brain. Of course, I've never done this. ;) But one thing I've learned the hard way ... foolish / stupid 'friends', either female or male, are real trouble.

They make bad choices, over and over. And, some of those choices can be deadly. They end up in jail, hurting themselves and others, in financial trouble, etc. It never ends.

It's like the sick puppy at the pet store. You'd like to take it home and nurse it back to health. But, the truth is, there are lots of sick puppies in the world, and you can't save all of them, or even most of them.

If you've tried to help her get out of this mess and she doesn't respond, then I agree ... stay away yourself. It isn't worth the brain damage, and it certainly isn't worth the potential physical danger you may find.

And, the time you don't spend with her can be time to find another woman with all the attributes you desire, including a brain. Those are generally the most exciting and fun ladies anyway, IMHO. Based upon my very limited experience. ;)

Good luck. Regards from AZ

I don't know about advising you on your personal life, my experience has been that no amount of good advice will dissuade a Lemming from jumping over the cliff of love and attraction, only the rocks that await his demise hold the truth.

As for the gun, reporting it lost or stolen won't work, telling the truth is a big mistake as a felony has been committed (straw purchase). The best bet is to regard the gun as non-returned property, this depends on state law however, because some states regard it as an offence to loan a gun to someone who cannot themselves purchase one (even if you were not aware of this fact), which is what I assume we have here, so it would be something on the lines of "Officer, my boyfriend asked if he could take a look at my pistol and now that we've split up he won't return it, what's more, I've since learned that he has been in some sort of trouble with the police in the past and I'm really concerned etc etc", it's not much but it's all I can come up with. BTW, it may sound corny, but the prettiest and nicest girls are to be found at Church or the Spirit Society at High School, oh that and Cheerleader practice of course, I guess you can only pine after the last 2, personally I now have to pine after all 3, happy hunting.

Regards,

Mike H

If, for some reason you must stick around, you should persuade her to hire a lawyer to figure out what optons she has. Once that is in motion, run like the wind. I have been involved with insane women who had a history. The roller-coaster ride is fun for a while but can be dangerous to your health and finances.

Might be a good time to take that around-the-world cruise while things sort out.

I just checked - there is no simile icon for "really".

Stay safe.

Go to your local law enforcement agency and report what happened. This weapon, will be used for who knows what evil porpose.

Whats seems to be the problem here Tackdriver? Do your duty as a law abiding citizen.

Run away as afast as you can? Check.

What to do about the gun? Does Mr. Name-on-Butt have a parole or probation officer who would be interested in his new toy? Does he carry it with him? Would a work on the sly to the cop on the street do the trick?

Good luck.

Call the police, or whom ever, and report that this clown has a gun that he acquired illegally.

Whether or not you report the woman is up to you.
