Are they really needed for primers and powders? What is the extra attention that must be paid? Do Fed Ex, UPS and others make a habit out of placing packages near a fire source?

Is this just a money grab?

Extra liability to travel with things like that. Who knows what kind of conditions packages can go through, better to be safe than sorry I guess. Sadly it deters me from buying this stuff online.

Insurance probably cost more, the drivers with the special license to transport that kind of cargo get paid more and there may be permits or something to carry that kind of cargo and special handeling. I am not for sure but that is my assumption.

DOT regulations requires certain paperwork and costs associated with that - that is passed on to the customer.

You are dealing with a flammable solid and an explosive source. Hazmat fees apply to a lot more than gun-related materials

It used to deter me as well. Then I realized that with the cost of gas, and sales tax, not to mention the higher prices charged at the local shops (they pay the hazmat too, and pass it on), I was still paying more.

If you plan your orders, and buy in bulk, you can usually make out pretty good. I just got my primer and powder order from Mid South today. Even with the hazmat fee, I saved about $35 over anything I could get here.
