Hawes Western Marshall 45 colt

Does anyone have any experience with the German made Hawes 45 colt single actions Western Marshall revolvers. Is it a good quality gun?

Also i think they make one in 44 mag, so does anyone know if the 45 colt is made on a larger frame like a Ruger (old model) Vaquero? Can it handle hotter loads

Yes, I have two. They are excellent quality revolvers. They were made by Sauer of West Germany, of Sig Sauer.......

Great shooters.

These guns can in no way be called "Colt clones" as they are not that. And in no way can they compare to Colt or Ruger. They are made of top quality steel, well made and finished, fit leaves a little to be desired. Non structural parts are made of either brass or ZAMAK.

But these guns function perfectly, are plenty strong, and parts are readily available. Being Single Actions, they are easily repaired. And, many parts interchange with Ubertis should you want a project gun.

For the price, they are bargains.

I believe they are all made on the same heavy frame. My .357 Magnum Hy Hunter is made on the .44 Frame.

There's other threads about them, with more answers, if you want to do a search.
I had a couple of them in .44 Mag, back in the days they were still on the market.
Plenty good guns, and the full power loads I used didn't hurt them.
You know the kind - if factory loads are good, a little more is even better.
The follies of youth.

Don't they look the same? The guns are good quality, so what is the issue?

Look the same, more or less

Colts were designed and built around certain pressure. Modern 'interpretations are often mechanically stronger and more reliable than Colt.

They are not "clones" in that they lack the color case hardening and dimensions are diferent, unlike the Ubertis which try to duplicate the feel of the Colt SAA. Further most German made Single Actions have the Christy type firing pin. So any attempt at authenticity is gone.

And compared to a Ruger, they lack the coil spring construction, transfer bar mechanism general ruggedness inherent to Ruger revolvers.

So the issue is if a man wants a superior hunting/long range shooting revolver, he won't get it in a Hy Hunter/Hawes sixgun. And if cowboy action is the game, he won't have a hard working, near-authentic clone.

As I said, they are bargains.

Maybe I can explain a little better. Here is my Hy Hunter .357 magnum, the forerunner of the Hawes Western Marshal:

And a close-up of the frame area:

Note the poor fit of the grip/trigger guard area, and rather poor fit of the trigger guard to the frame.

I removed the ZAMAK parts and replaced them with brass, also replaced the plastic grips with walnut:

I was going to install a Colt-type hammer and adjustable sights, but after talking with my gunsmith I would easily have invested $200 in what would be a nice custom gun worth $300. In other words I would have maybe $500 ~ $600 into a $300 gun that would be worth only $300 after cusomizing.
