Have you seen this ad for a Garand?

It was in an issue of Rifleman:
Own a Garand - For only $500 (Through Civilian Marksmanship Program - CMP)

I know these are generally expensive and wanted to know whats the catch.

What condition are these in? The ad says "Genuine Government Issue - U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M-1

I was unable to access their web site.

Just wondering if anyone followed through on this and if its worth it.

The "catch" is that you have to either belong to an affiliated club and shot in a high power rilfe match or you have to shoot in a sanctioned match. When you do, you get a certificate that allows you to purchase the Garand, ammo, slings, M16 mags and other surplus stuff at awesome prices. Go to www.odcmp.com for all the details.

If you're current or former US military, you don't have to shoot a match. If you do shoot the match, you don't have to win or anything.

The catches are pretty minimal and well worth it when your GI Garand comes to your door.

Also, at least a year ago when I got my Garand, you didn't have to do match shooting if you were a certificated firearms instructor. However, the shooting course is not difficult and is fun to do.

Well worth the minimal time, effort and cost. I've received two M1's from the CMP and will probably pick up another next year.

LEO's also do not need to shoot the matches.

CMP is worth it. I have not personally seen a really bad M1 and have seen many beautiful service grades. They cannot be beat for $500, period, and many are better than the $750 gunshow guns.

I have received an H&R M1 (the first M!), a Springfield M1D with M84 scope from the CMP predecessor entity, the DCM, along with M1 spare parts, walnut stocks, ammo and M14 magazines. I have received the following .22RF trainers and match rifles from CMP: a new H&R M12 with sights, a new Remington M541X, 2 Mossberg M44US, and the new Kimber 82G. By new I mean new, in the box, unfired.

Good luck.

I just sent in for a Mossberg M44, one of their .22 trainng rifles. If everything work out well I'll be putting in an order for a Garand later this year.

Go with CMP....

I now own several rifles, M1's and M-44's, from CMP and am happy with all of them. Will buy more....

Beware though, M1's are addictive. Once you shoot one, you have to try more. ;)

I highly recommend the CMP. My son and I joined a CMP club this year and we have gotten the Mossberg M44US rifles, and just got my Aug. 1942 Springfield M1 last week. Also have gotten several cases of ammo.

Last year's ad (pre-July 2000) was even better when they sold their M-1s for $400. They warned us of the impending price increase to $500 and my response was to immediately buy two. While neither were as pretty as their previous offerings, it's a deal one should not pass up. Wood is cheap but getting a good receiver, bolt & op rod aren't.
