Extremely well done. The page I linked above has a little intro video of a guy supposedly using an Encore rifle against a charging bear. That takes some guts!

What is the difference between an Encore and a Contender? I know the Contender is the older model, and was under the impression that the Encore is an older design.

Aside from having to reload after each shot, is there any disadvantage to an Encore? I figure that for hunting anything but birds, I would only get one shot anyway.

Contender v Encore

You can do everything with an encore that you can do with a contender.
A contender cannot do everything an encore can.

Example:
Encore .17 hmr cal to .416 Rigby, 12 or 20 gauge 3" slug or shot, 50 cal, 45 cal or 12 gaugemuzzleloader.

Contender .17 to .444 marlin. 20 gauge, .45 cal muzzleloader.

These may not be exact but are close examples.
Check out Match Grade Machine Barrels and ssk for complete chamber/caliber choice.(hundreds)

I own 1 Encore and 2 Contenders(one carbine/one pistol).

Contenders and Contender G2 are different. G2 are on ounce heavier, easier to open and can be recocked and shot without opening.
Both can use new and old barrels. Encores cannot use conterder balles or vise verse.
Contenders are smaller and lighter.(about 1 pound) Contenders make better pistols.

Encores can be pistol or rifle. Encore make better rifles.

Pretty much as bcarver has stated. A bit more info would be:
  • Contenders are the oldest and there were about three generations of this basic model. The changes primarily delt with the selector on the hammer to change between Rim and Center. At one time you could get these in just about any of the lower calibers. They cut back quite a bit but you still can get them in 4570.
  • Later, they wanted to handle larger calibers so they basically engineered a new frame and that was the Encore. There is an entire family of Encores with different names but they are still Encores.
  • Then about three years ago, they decided to beef up the Basic Contender model and add some features that the older Contenders did not have. These are called G2 Contenders, I suppose for 2nd. Generation.
Have to say that I own more of these and barrels, than I care to mention. All are excellent shooters and very reliable. A blued Contender Carbine in the older shorter barrels and good wood, is a thing of beauty. I personally prefer the older Contender frames over the new G2's. You use to get different barrels from their custom shop, Fox Ridge but they closed. I'm an still on the lookout for a Carbine barrel in .222.

Be Safe !!!
