Have You Ever Carried Where You Shouldn't?

Here's the deal. In my state, CCW is legal except for the usual gun-free shooting galleries - schools, courts, airports. So, it's legal for me to carry it to the car. It's legal for me to carry it out of the car and into the grocery store, or theater, or comedy club. But believe it or not, it is illegal to carry the loaded "firearm" in the car (the law doesn't distinguish between long guns and pistols or those with CCW).

Because it's concealed, i don't want to have to load it and strap it back on every time i get out of the car. That really detracts from the "concealed" part. The penalty for getting caught carrying in a car is rather severe, at least from the perspective of a law-mostly-abiding citizen.

What would you do? Besides lobbying for a change in the statute, i mean.

Responsible Gun Owners

The law is pretty clear, whether we like it or not. As responsible citizens, it is our duty and our privilege to obey the law. I would not encourage you to speed in your vehicle if you were late to work, just because it is inconvenient to obey the speed limit; I woud not encourage you to steal breath mints from Wal-Mart, just because it is inconvenient to get your wallet out; nor will I encourage you to break the law, just because compliance is inconvenient. It is inconvenient for me to take my gun out when I go in to my daughter's school or the post office; but that is the law.

It is a privilege to live in this country; we enjoy its freedoms and we put up with its inconveniences. If you choose to break the law, then you choose to accept the consequences.

I believe everyone here will echo these sentiments.

Really limits the value of a CCW permit if you can't carry in a vehicle - which state?

To answer your question: Not as far as I know, but it wouldn't surprise me if I have inadvertently violated a firearms law by carrying a locked, unloaded handgun or long gun to the range just about once a week for the past few years. (My county doesn't issue permits as a matter of policy.)

Concealed is concealed. I don't know how you would be caught. Plus, I certainly wouldn't want to take the chance on being car jacked.

Yes, concealed is concealed, but being honest and following the law is being honest and following the law.

A big +1, RevJim.

Why don't you keep the gun on you with no ammo in it? Have a loaded magazine within reach. Then your gun is not loaded. Completely legal based off what you said.

Here in NC, the cops know if you have a concealed carry permit when they submit your license number for a check. If it is the same there, they can ask if you have the gun on you once they see you have the permit. If he/she said no and did have it guess what would happen if the cop wanted to search for weapons.

I dont encourage anyone to carry concealed illegally. Just what the left needs is more fuel to fire when it comes to gun control. Just do what your state says you can do and if you disagree with the law call your senator or congress man

hogwash

It is our duty and privilege to get asinine and unjust laws changed.
There is no privilege in obeying a stupid law.

From the boston tea party to prohibition to the end of jim crow laws, Americans have a long and proud history of fighting injustice, legal or not.
So next time you have a sip of wine or beer, remember it is only possible because the government lost the war on that drug and had to give in to the american citizens who didnt see the law as a privilege.
You owe your rights... to felons.... remember to send a thank you card :D

It is a privilege to live in this country; we enjoy its freedoms and we put up with its inconveniences.
It is my right to live in this country, not a privilege.
This is a country that stands up for what's right, not a country that bends over and takes it because it was written into law.... next time you see a woman or black person vote, remember that

That is one of the saddest, most defeatist attitudes i've seen on here. If most Americans really did follow those beliefs, then we'd still be waiving the british flag, sipping tea, and singing god save the queen.

What would you do? Besides lobbying for a change in the statute, i mean.

nope. start with a letter.... and go from there.
either that, or face the consequences.

Ya know, it'd be a HUGE help if you provided your state.
What you say is the CCW law sounds a bit off (at least to me).
Each state has different laws, so any info given is just speculation.
Give us something to refer to (a state, a link to the laws, statutes, etc.).

We, as Americans, have no duty to obey unjust laws.

The politicians have the duty to create just laws, and they have ignored that duty.

Why should we cling to some sort of nationalistic, idealistic line of thought that we should just do as we're told without question, especially at the expense of our safety?

Polarized Responses

First off, i am in Connecticut.

No loaded weapons are legal in a vehicle except for LEO. The requirement then to unload and case the weapon, then uncase, reload and reconceal when exiting, greatly increases the chances of being observed, accused of brandishing, or just generally alarming folks unaccustomed to seeing firearms.

I think this is merely an unintended consequence of the various competing and conflicting firearms laws applied over time because it defeats many basic principles of concealed carry. I am writing letters to legislators, but this is a very blue state whose state house every year puts VPC and Brady type bills into committee for consideration. Ammo serialization, microstamping, etc are considered each term but generally don't make it to a vote. The legislators are not motivated to conform the laws, or make things any less "safe" for the population as they see it.

I am not surprised to see responses gathered around 2 poles - obey the letter of the law, or ignore the stupid law.

Have to admit, i can't ignore the law. I will continue to work at effecting the necessary change.

Thanks for the viewpoints.

Who decides which laws are unjust?

In short, what you're suggesting is anarchy. Individuals deciding for themselves which laws are worth following and which ones aren't.

That is NOT America. Follow the laws and work to get them changed.

And Peet summed it up very well. Folks, this is The Firing Line, where we advocate responsible firearms ownership. Responsible doesn't only apply to safety, it also refers to obeying the laws, whether or not we agree with them.

As many here have said, if you don't like those laws, work to change them. If you want to advocate breaking the law, you'll NOT use TFL as a vehicle to do so.
