Have you ever been Pepper sprayed or sprayed anyone?

My wife just doesn't have it in her to shoot a person, regardless of how deserving!!! But she thinks she could Pepper/OC spray a bad guy?
Does anyone have FIRST hand experience with these sprays? :confused:
I witnessed a guy get tasered a few years back and that worked like MAGIC!!!:D But she is scarred of the hand held ones.
 
Been sprayed and have sprayed before in the military. I would not count on it as a life saving device. It is a deterrent at best. Don't get me wrong some it is potent crap that will stop the average person...however I have seen it sprayed and not stop the threat at all.
 
Been through the Navy "gas chamber" in boot and again at the reserve police academy. Yes my snot glands passed the test both times.
A person's mentality will probably determine how they will react when they get hit with it.
 
I do work in jails and talk with staff. Pepper Spray is unpredictable. It will either completely remove their will to keep doing what they are doing or it will be the potion that turns Dr Jekyll into Mr Hyde.

In short, no i would not rely on it. Doesn't mean I want to get sprayed with the stuff.
 
Did it to myself one day in the backyard to test it out. I first sprayed some out straight to see how far the range was, not impressive. With even a little wind it was hard to deploy perfectly straight.

When I sprayed myself at arm's length, it was pretty awful. I did my best to give myself a fair dose and I can tell you I was blinded and hugging the wall to get to the hose.

My impression, I feel better with a good can of pepper spray, but it requires pretty close contact and you could easily catch some yourself.
 
YES it Hurts!

I sprayed myself at arms length (eyes wide open) with ASP palm defender and thought I would be able to fight through it (I was wrong). My eyes were clenched so tight I had to use my fingers and physically open my eyes to flush them. After about 10 minutes of flushing I could open my eyes without touching them but it was prob 45 minutes before I could keep them open. I was VERY impressed with the spray. I had no idea it was that potent. I will always carry my gun but I think its worth having as an additional tool.
 
Yes, and yes--multiple times!!!

Do NOT depend on OC to take the fight out of a person. They can STILL fight, and fight hard.

I respect your wife's opinion--but OC should be used with caution. It CAN buy a few seconds, or it can make a bad situation a LOT worse in a hurry.
 
I would consider my self a pepper spray, oc, cs and cn expert. I retired from corrections as a supervisor I have been sprayed and as a high security supervisor I administered chemical agents hundreds of times and reaction from being sprayed I have seen grown men curly up in a ball and cry to ones that would stand and eat cans of it with out effect. You can also build a tolerance after about a year of daily adminstration of it I got where I never wore a gas mask and could work it in safely. A direct burst in the eyes still had effect but walking and breathng it had little effect. After seing what I have seen it has benefit but I would not trust my life that it would save me from an attack.
 
Not directly on self.

Not used on a person.

Did use on a German Shepard mix which came after me while delivering pizza in 1992. It worked very well and also served to keep the angry frat boys whose loose dog wanted to eat me back while I made change with one hand and delivered their pies. No tip though.
 
Have done both as part of the Navy's security force training. I was on the receiving end twice and both times I was still able to keep attacking the sprayer with my baton with enough effect that I would consider sprays a poor choice for self defense.
 
I have used the Kimber Life Act (which I believe is now called the Kimber pepper blaster..) and it worked like a charm. It delivers a 90mph blast of spray and it has 2 shots. It hits hard (I heard it actually slap both of the guys faces when it hit) and they were screaming like babies for an hour in the back of the police car.

The only draw back is it only offers two direct shots. But it worked.

It was certainly effective on me during training and when it works it's great stuff for ending fights and so forth.
BUT
You don't spray it and stand there, you get poised for flight, let fly, and back the hell off because when it doesn't work you've just seriously tweaked someone off and then the only target they care about is YOU. :eek:

yes, it sucks. couldn't open my eyes for at least 45 mins. made my training Lt laugh the rest of the day.
 
Yes and yes. I've used pepper spray NUMEROUS times with differing results. It is definately NOT something I would bet my life on (or my loved ones). There are so many factors which can all affect how it effects a person. Weather conditions, the targets mental state, prior exposure (most ex-military guys I've met are immune it seems), how well the stream is applied, duration and it could go on.

I've sprayed folks and had them freak out and run screaming, I've had them just look at me and stand their ground, some it works on, and some it just plain made mad and we resorted to the old fashioned manner of handling such incidents:D, Now her primary concern is simply getting away so simply blinding a subject may have the desired effects but, like firearms, nothing is %100 effective so it pays to have an alternative.

Also, everytime I have ever been around a pepper spray incident, I always get hit either directly, or with overspray or through transfer contact when we end up having to go hands-on, and while it has varying effects on the bad guys, the stuff ALWAYS works on me. LOL. So, she had better be prepared for the effects herself (which means exposing her to it) so she doesn't freak out when her eyes clamp shut and she can't breath.

I'm not saying that it's worthless and if thats all she'll carry, then thats all she'll carry. It is better then nothing (marginally) and much better then giving her a firearm she does not want or know how to use. Although she needs to understand it's limitations and not think it's a cure all and not be surprised when the big 300 pound biker (or the little 100 pound woman...those are the worst) snorts it up and keeps coming.

Tasers are great...when they work. I've seen them not work for a variety of reasons. The BG's are now practicing ways to defeat Tasers. They know they're out there and are prepared. They are great for LEO's when there are (usually) more then one of us so if one Taser doesnt get him or doesnt work, #2 is on the way. We also have other options (up to deadly force) if the thing fails to work. Like they teach us, it's simply another tool and you have to know it's limitations.

Like the pepper spray, it's better than nothing and probably ranks higher up the effectiveness scale then the spray except if she misses with one of the two probes, it's game over. yes the taser does have a "stun gun" type feature but that does not cause the complete muscle failure and associated collapse that the probes do...it just HURTS and sometimes that pisses people off. With pepper spray, at least you have multiple shots so it's a trade off (both would be a better option)

But, whatever option she chooses, as others on this forum can attest to, without the conscious ability to use the tools at hand, and the mental preperation to inflict harm on another human if the need arises, all of the equipment in the world is for naught.

been sprayed in the academy. most of the the other officers sprayed could not function well and were in a lot of pain, a couple of officers had some real bad reactions to it... myself and another officer got sprayed and were able to continue fighting for 2 minutes will little ill effect. it made me close my eyes at first but nothing in the way of effecting my breathing or that much pain... i was still able to take down and handcuff a redman after being sprayed. so i guess it depends on the person. i would not trust my life with a gamble like that.

I think its a useful tool, not to be thought of as a cure-all, just as a gun is not the cure-all either.

Some types of spray are meant for indoor, some are outdoor applicable. I have never been able to avoid crosscontamination when using spray.

Keep encouraging your wife to the Taser. Probably a better fit.
 
I work in a Jail everyday..... and yes it sucks getting sprayed, and I hate it and never would want to get sprayed for fun... but on the other hand we are required for training to get sprayed and then fight, disarm suspects, handcuff, escort, ect... if the threat has a strong will or does not have the mental capacity (seriously) or is under the influence of drugs they may not even know they were sprayed. If your wife or whoever was to try to spray someone they would have to make sure the threat was in the effective range... there is no wind blowing back at themself, and all so you can't forget if you are in a concealed area you are going to feel a good amount of the effects even if you are not directly hit... and such other variables ..... all so you have to make sure you spray the THREAT... sounds funny but we have officers that can manage to spray everyone in the room,cincluding themselves, besides the threat . Those are just the negatives.... i live in a state where legal civilian concealed carry is not going to happen, and my wife wouldn't carry a firearm anyway, but I would still rather her carry pepper spray. My suggestion is if you and your wife decide you would like to carry pepper spray (and it is legal in your state to do so) would be spend the 10 bucks or whatever it is and buy a inert training pepper spray... so atleast she could get a feel for how it works and the effective range.... set up a q target or whatever in the back yard and have at it.
