Have I found true pistol versatility??

I've won the bid on a Thompson Contender Encore 15" barrel in .460 S&W.
I'm told it also will shoot .454 Casull, .45 Colt, and .410 shotgun rounds.
Can anyone verify, or find an action shot on YouTube? Thanks.

I would say yes to .45 LC and 410 shotgun if it was originally chambered for .454, . . . but I would get it in writing from Thompson before I would put anything other than a .460 in a gun chambered for the .460

Better to be very, very safe, . . . than to be a little bit sorry.

May God bless,
Dwight

Versatility, eh? Make sure you spell that word correctly on the medical history page you have your wife write on the form they hand you at the Emergency Room for the broken wrist and swollen knot on your forehead! :D

That monster is going to be ugly when it goes loud. I've got a 10-inch .44 Magnum barrel on a Contender and it knocks the ever-loving crap out of you when you shoot it. It's nothing, nothing like any .44 Mag revolver I've ever lit off -- it's plain evil.

.460 Mag or .454 Casull from an Encore pistol? It's gotta be awful.

For those that will tell me I'm wrong, please explain why. Does it come mag-na-ported?

If it will handle .460S&WMagnum then it will also handle all the other rounds you listed. The freebore might mean that the shorter rounds won't be as accurate as you might like--or maybe it will be just fine. Generally a lot of freebore isn't good for accuracy but you never know.

For sure it will shoot .45LC, and .454 Casull, because their OAL length is shorter than the .460 and they will fit in .460 chambers. Don't know for sure about the .410 tho. I would assume TCs website could tell you.

Just a quick point of clarification, you have a TC encore, not a TC contender encore....because a contender encore does not exist.

It'll be fine with .460, .454, 45 LC and .410 shotshells. Get ready for the recoil from the .460 rounds. They are brisk....

If it held more than 1 round, it would be true pistol versatility...LOL

I have a SW .460 XVR, and have shot all 3 different rounds out of it. I have not tried (nor do I intend to) a .410 shotshell, but I have a cylinder gap that you do not.

.460 S&W has a case length of 1.8". Is there really enough freebore in the Encore to chamber a 2 1/2" .410 shell? Not saying I doubt it, alot of the 357 mag Contender barrels will chamber 357 max, just curious.

Well, it probably works the same way the .45LC/.410 barrel does, in that it's actually chambered for the .410, but you can incidentally stuff a variety of pistol calibers into the same hole. :)

If that were the case I'm sure my 15" 25-06 Encore would have heavy recoil as well and I find it to be a very shootable gun. Sure, it has recoil but its never given me a swollen wrist or a knot on my forehead.
