Have information on a Remington 16 gauge "The Sportsman" made in 1948, or any sites he could try? My Father-In-Law gave it to my son before he passed, and now he would like to research it as throughly as possible. He tried the best he could but I told him this place was a wealth of knowledge.

Thanks in advance!

I bet Harley Nolden could provide you with info and possibly even an owners manual if you post in his forum below :)

Great thing about TFL is the knowledge base that exists here.

This is almost surely either the old M11 with a square stern like the Browning Auto-5 or its streamlined successor, the M11-48. Both use the long recoil system of operation.

I think the Sportsman models may have had less magazine capacity.

Remington should be able to tell you. If you don't get an answer here, call Brownell's or write a Q&A column at a gun magazine.

Rem 11-48

I'm not sure where this is going. 2 semi-autos, and a pump.

Possibly if the type action was presented it would be easier to determine.

I'm betting on the Sportsman Model Semi-Auto - 12,16,20ga., 26" bbl., 3 shot, skeet choke, beavertail forend. 1931-1949.

The Blue Book says the one I thought it would be, the Model 48 Sportsman, wasn't introduced until 1949.

How was it determined that the gun was made in 1948?

Even the Rem model 58 was called the sportsman and it was made from1956-1963. If it was able to be determined the year of mfg., then we should have the more information than what is provided.
