i have 3(in 12 ga) i picked up used for $100 each. one looks pretty used and it did have a bolt guide(?) disconnect from the fore arm pump handle(?) but someone took it to their shop and fixed it. even broken it still worked fine with the other bolt guide.

if your mossberg 500 did break, what was it and about how many rounds?

I'd imagine that if I ran it over with a caterpillar tractor it might break, but other than that they should continue to function for many years.

First Mossy is over 22 YO and has well over 15k rounds through it. Still running strong. It's part of my home defense battery.

Second Mossy (835) is 18 YO and has over 10K rounds...still running strong. This is my waterfowler.

Third Mossy (20 Gauge) is only 7 YO and has around 2K rounds through it. It's just broken in. This one is my beater upland game gun.

Although they can be broken, one usually has to go to some extreme to do it. Just my experience.

Some 500s have a reputation of the safety acting up. It did one mine and got stuck halfway between "fire" and "safe." It was a minor nuisance but an inexpensive fix. I don't know if this issue was more common to a certain time frame or not. Mine was made in the late 90s.

I've never had any other problems with the gun.

Resin safety switch cracked on one I put I don't know HOW many, many, thousands of rounds trough. I had to put a small washer in it's place till I put in a metal switch...

Only weak point I see in them and I recommend replacing the resin one with metal on purchase (590 A1'a already have them).

27,000 through three guns? That's IT? I have a Browning O/U with right at 200,000 through it - no issues

If that is to be the standard of a pumps longevity, it doesn't seem to hand with a goon O/U

OOL, No he is saying that in that round count has there not been an issue... He didn't say that is the point at which they will fail...

My M-500-D has less than 20k thru it but it would have many more had it not spent 10 years in an evidence room...

Many hundreds of the round count was ABUSIVE use in an attempt to find a weak link before I relied on said gun...

I dont own any mossbergs but am a fair gun repairer. I have recently repaired a friends 500. His trigger group had a pin break. In the field as we were, a nail from a fence post and my leatherman got it shooting again. Another friend had one of the 500 series a few years ago that broke. I recall fixing it for him but I cant recall what the problem was. I do remember it was virtually new and required new parts from the factory.

I had my mag tube and barrel "break" on me not too long ago. I had it leaning against the truck when I forgot about it and drove off......running it over with the back wheels. Bent the mag tube and barrel, replaced both and it's been working good again.

The safety has been sticking on me alot lately but it doesn't really bother me as I don't use it. Only notice it while cleaning/playing with it....guess one of these days I'll replace that too.

On the day of the Dove opener I had the trigger group pin walk out of the gun allowing the trigger group to fall into onto the sand dune I was hiding behind... I found the pin and then carried the gun back to the truck... I grabbed my back-up and then continued shooting.. Later that day, I cleaned out the trigger group and reassembled the gun... The gun worked fine and all I had to do was to adjust the pin retainer to prevent it from happening again..

Did my 500 break?? No.. Lets just say it had some technical difficulties for a brief period :D

hoyt, Your safety is sticking because of dirt most likely... Tearing it down is easy... JUST DO IT OVER A TOWEL TO CATCH THE TINY BALL BEARING AND SPRING YOU WILL NEED TO FIND!!!

Brent, yeah I've been thinking about taking it off and cleaning it. I've owned the thing about 20 years now and never taken the safety apart. :o

Light primer strikes after 10 years and thousands of rounds ..... never bothered to fix it ..... I picked up another used pump gun (WIN 1200) for cheap ..... still using that.

Hoyt, I was taking mine off to do a dremel mod to smooth it out... Couldn't find my bit box so I cleaned and reassembled... SMOOTH AS BUTTAH after that... never did the mod which is just tapering the holes on the metal plate you will find...

Jimbo... Your issue is often dirt build up as well in the TG (hammer is sluggish to fall) or gunk in the bolt/firing pin assembly...

Brent

Nope- still did it after a thorough cleaning.

I asked a gunsmith about it and he thought the tang safety might have something to do with it..... I found a good deal on the WIN, though I like the handling of the 500 better. Maybe I should get that fixed......

Easy to rule in or out the tang safety... just take it out and try gun with safety removed... ;)

Yeah, I see a possible issue there... the tab inside may be bent a bit...
Or safety switch ain't going fully "open" for whatever reason...

Brent

Thanks!

Might try to fix that myself then, 'dogs....... though I might have a bit of difficulty with the assembly/disassembly, as I have not broken it down for a 5 years or so.....
