has your blueing ever failed?

I have never had a problem with this, other than wearing off after time, but I don't carry, and don't live in a humid climate. Never the less, I keep leaning towards stainless or hard chrome in a new gun because of concerns about rust. Not sure if these are realistic or not. Has anybody had bluing fail for them?

I have never had my bluing fail unless I messed it up somehow. Keep in mind stainless can rust also and chrome can chip. If you take care of your blued guns they should last.

Birchwood Casey makes a product called SHEATH that is excellent for use on blue. It's a LOT easier that McGuire's Carnuba auto wax, which I think gives the longest protection, BUT what a pain to apply.

haha...touched up the blue on my sig last night!! used the birchwood casey stuff. right before my eyes the shiney parts turned dark again, only thing is, turned out splotchy im not sure what to think.did i do it right? is a $3.00 bottle of chemical too good to be true?

I know a lot of people who simply abuse their guns, shoot the heck out of them, carry them w/out a holster next to bare skin, and then never clean/lube them. No wonder we hear stories of guns rusting. If you just perform routine maintenance on your firearm, the pistol may lose some of its finish, but it should not rust. Even here on the humid Gulf Coast, I have never witnessed a speck of rust formation on any of my guns, including a blued revolver which has never been cleaned.

I have a 586 I bought used nearly 20 years ago. I seldom shoot it, and it sits in a plastic bag in my closet. It's the gun I take with me on motorcycle trips (bought it cheap, so...). It's gotten soaked when I've been through some nasty weather, it's been in a holster in some sandstorms, and it still looks just fine. Having said all that, I think I'd better wipe it down tonight.

Agreed with the above. Rust indicates neglect. As long as a blue finish is properly maintained, it may wear thin but it will not rust. Stainless, nickel, etc. may be more forgiving, but they have maintenance requirements of their own.

BTW, the rust I've experienced has mainly been on a couple of blued magazines. It was my fault: I wiped down the guns but forgot to do the same with the mags.

My blued guns rust, my hard-chromed gun rusts, my stainless guns rust. I keep them in Blue Bags in my safe.

Gonna' try Robar NP3 on my 1911, see if THAT rusts! LOL

I should add that I abuse my guns, shoot the heck out of them, rarely clean or lube them, and generally treat them like the tools they are.

PS I have lots of guns. None are magical, nor are they irreplacable. They're just guns.
