Has anyone tried this with their mags?

Ok, here's the story. I just bought a SIG P226 9mm from a dealer. The gun was a LE trade in and so far besides VEEEEEERY slight holster wear I can't find anything wrong with it besides the price of hi-cap mags.

I was examining the mags and on a whim I picked up one of my many Beretta 92Fs mags and compared them side by side. Hmm, they look almost the same except for the cutout for the mag catch. Loaded up several of the Beretta mags and slid them in the SIG. With the mag catch depressed they fit perfectly. So while holding the Beretta mag in the SIG in place I started cycling rounds by hand and lo and behold, no problems feeding or ejecting. Heck the follower even activated the slide lock.

So here's what I'm thinking. Take the trusty dremmel to one of the beretta mags and cut out a mag catch corresponding to the location on the SIG mags. I have plenty of them and Beretta hi-caps are a whole lot cheaper than SIG mags. Am I off my rocker or have some of you tried something like this before?

Modified AR-15 mags to work in a Armalite 180 by cutting new notches. I modified a old 1911 mag by cutting s small slot in the back and it worked kinda ok in my AMT DAO Backup.

Now as to the question "Am I off my rocker....?" I don't have an answer to that one. LOL

there is a similar thred on the beretta-L list. the guys there took beretta 96 10round mags and loaded 13rounds of 9mm in them and they worked thru a beretta 92FS.

i have the same theory for both these situations:

the only reason to use hi-caps is for self defense. therefore you have to have complete trust in your magazines, gun, and ammo that you use for this purpose. i would not feel comforatable using a mag for a gun or bullet that it was not designed for. what if the mag failed to function reliably at the time you need it to work most?

I have a S&W Performance Center 945 (picked it up before they signed a deal with the devil). It came with 2 mags. The price for new mags from the Performance Center was quite high. Since it has the same frame as a 4506, I picked up three used 4506 mags and had a smith mill new slots for the mag release. They work just fine.

I know that the Beretta 92 FS mags will fit in the South African Z88 and SP1 pistols (9x19mm). In looking at the Vektor's CP1 (the compact 9), it looks as if it might take Beretta mags (they would stick out).
I had the idea of buying decent aftermarket mags or factory ones that one wouldn't be afraid to modify, and trim down the magazine body/tube to the length of the CP1 magazine (don't forget to keep enough metal for tabs on the side to retain the floorplate), and add the Vektor's floorplate. I am not completely sure, but it does look possible.
Another thing I had done with cheap aftermarket SIG mags was to add the 3 witness holes that the factory mags have with a drill. After filing off the metal (a little tricky), they function fine, but I would only want to use then as range/plinking mags.
