has anyone here put a peepsight on an AK47?

I've got the Kobra red-dot sight for my SLR95, along with the original iron sights of course.

I'm interested in upgrading the rear sight to improve the iron sights as backups to the Kobra.

Has anyone here tried this on their AK? If so, please tell us all about it. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Thanks in advance.

I put Williams peep sight and orange plastic front post on mine

A great improvement over the black post and v-notch, especially in low light. Slight radius is still short but target acquisition improved considerably. Windage adjustment is now possible on the rear sight. Elevation adjustment required locktite.

I agree with Oleg. I had one on my SLR95. It seems to help alot when your eyes get older to clairify the image of the target also.

Oleg and plateshooter: thanks for the replies. Could you provide some details:

1) which peep sight? where to get it? installation notes?
2) where to get an orange front sight?

Any details are greatly appreciated. I'm no gunsmith and the few good ones around here have 6 month waiting times, so this has to be a do-it-yourself project.

I don't remember where I got the parts

However, http://www.sksman.com seems like a probably source. The peep sight was $25, installation was $15. Package of several colored plastic front posts was under $5. One (red) was damaged but orange worked out even better. An AK sight tool is required for installation but that you need anyway in order to zero a regular AK.
There are several pictures of me with that Mak90 on my site and you can see an overall view of that set-up. I will photograph it close up tonight and post.
In low light, the new sight was on part with a Garand and better than AR15 or FAL.

That Mak90 does 2-3MOA in theory. In practice, that means I can hit a sporting clay at 100m just about every time by aiming straight at it. At 50m, I need to aim right under the clay to hit it. Seems easier to me than mucking with the range slider...and the 200-500 markings are way too optimistic for my skill levle anyway.

peep site

You can install the unit youself in about 3 minutes. You just pop out the origional site and slide the new one in. If I remember, there is a pin to drive in. It's not complicated. I got mine, and several for SKSs, from Cheaper than Dirt. They were $25.00.

Thanks plateshooter. I ordered the Williams peepsight and a few orange front sight posts from SKS Man yesterday afternoon.

Any pointers on the Williams sight, i.e. is Locktite recommended? Thanks.

Sure, just go buy yourself a Valmet. Very nice peep sights on the receiver cover. Pricey guns, though...
